    Use application groups to organize large-scale, frequently changing cloud resources by tag or resource group. Apply alert templates to application groups to manage alert rules centrally.

    Prerequisites

    Your resources have tags or resource groups assigned.

    Step 1: Create an application group

    Create an application group by tag or resource group. Matching resources are automatically added, allowing you to manage them at the group level.

    1. Log on to the Cloud Monitor console.

    2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Cloud Resource Monitoring > Application Groups.

    3. On the Application Groups tab, click Create Application Group.

    4. In the Create Application Group panel, set Creation Method to Create Based on Tags or Create from Resource Group, and configure the parameters for the application group.

      Configure application group parameters by following Create an application group by tag or Create an application group by resource group.

      Note

      Choose tags if your resources are tagged, or resource groups if your resources belong to a resource group.

    5. Click OK.

      The Group Overview page displays basic information and associated cloud services for the application group.

    Step 2: View monitoring data for the application group

    After you create an application group in Step 1, view the monitoring data for resources in the group.

    1. In the left-side navigation pane, click Dashboards.

    2. Click a cloud service tab and specify a time range.

      The monitoring charts for the service metrics are displayed.

    Step 3: Create an alert template and apply it to the application group

    Create an alert template and apply it to the application group. Cloud Monitor automatically generates alert rules from the template.

    1. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Alerts > Alert Templates.

    2. On the Alert Templates page, click Create Alert Template.

    3. In the Create Alert Template panel, enter a name for the alert template, select a cloud service, and then configure the parameters for the metric template.

      Configure metric template parameters by following Create an alert template.

    4. Click OK.

    5. In the Alert Template Created/Modified dialog box, click OK.

    6. In the Apply Templates to Groups dialog box, select the application group that you created in Step 1. You can keep the default values for the other parameters.

    7. Click OK.

    8. In the Apply Templates to Groups dialog box, click OK.

      The alert template is applied to the application group. Alert rule creation takes a few minutes.

    Step 4: View resources with triggered alerts

    Check which resources are triggering alerts and review the alert history for each application group.

    1. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Alerts > Alerts.

    2. On the Alerts page, click the Application Groups tab to view the number of resources that are triggering alerts for each application group.
