Create an application group

Application groups allow you to manage resources across different cloud services and regions. You can create an application group, add related resources such as servers and databases to the same group, and manage alert rules at the application group level.

Background information

The following table describes the methods for creating application groups and the cloud services supported by each method.

Creation method

Description

Supported cloud services

By tag

If your instances have tags attached, you can create an application group by defining a matching rule for those tags. An application group is automatically created for each unique tag value that matches the rule, and all matching instances are automatically added to the group. New instances that match the tag rule are also automatically added. You can match up to 3,000 instances at a time.

For more information about how to create and attach custom tags in Resource Management, see Create and attach a custom tag.

Manual

You can manually create a standard application group to manage a fixed set of existing instances.

By resource group

If you have configured resource groups, you can create an application group from a resource group. All instances in the specified resource group are then added to the application group.

Create an application group by tag

  1. Log on to the Cloud Monitor console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Cloud Resource Monitoring > Application Groups.

  3. On the application groups tab, click Create application group in the upper-left corner.

  4. In the Create application group panel, set Creation Method to By Tag and configure the parameters.

    Parameter

    Description

    Application group name

Cloud Monitor automatically generates a name for the application group.

    Resource tag region

The region to which the application group belongs.

    Resource tag key

The tag key of the instance. You can define matching rules based on tag keys and values to automatically add instances.

You can specify up to three tag rules, which are evaluated with a logical AND. You can also select a tag key to use as a prefix for the application group name.

The name is generated in the <tag key>-<tag value>-<Random string> format.

    Resource tag value

The tag value of the instance. You can define matching rules based on tag keys and values to automatically add instances.

Cloud Monitor automatically matches instances whose tag values contain, have a prefix of, have a suffix of, do not contain, or are equal to the value you specify. You can also select All instances that have the specified tag key. Instances that meet the matching rule are automatically added to the application group. New instances that meet the matching rule are also automatically added to the group.

You can specify up to three tag rules, which are evaluated with a logical AND. You can also select a tag key to use as a prefix for the application group name.

The name is generated in the <tag key>-<tag value>-<Random string> format.

    Initialize agent installation

If a resource is an ECS instance, Cloud Monitor automatically installs the agent on the instance to collect monitoring data.

The Initialize agent installation switch is turned on by default.

    Subscribe to event notifications

If a critical or warning event occurs on a resource in the application group, Cloud Monitor sends an alert notification to the specified Alert Contact Group.

The Subscribe to event notifications switch is turned on by default.

    Alert contact group

The contact group that receives alert notifications.

For more information about how to create an alert contact group, see Create an alert contact group.

    Alert template

The alert template used to initialize alert rules for the application group.

For more information about how to create an alert template, see Create an alert template.

  5. Click OK.

You can view the created application group on the application groups tab.
