Alibaba Cloud Service Mesh (ASM) is based on native Istio and provides solutions that are centered on multi-language traffic management. Because Istio versions are continuously upgraded, ASM periodically releases its supported Istio versions. This topic describes the Istio version support mechanism of Service Mesh (ASM) and the compatibility between ASM and ACK versions.

Release cycle
ASM releases a new major Istio version approximately every three months.
After a major version is released, ASM periodically provides a patch release, such as v1.18.x.y, to deliver feature updates and fix vulnerabilities.
For patch release upgrades, such as upgrading from v1.18.0.123 to v1.18.0.146, the system performs automatic hot updates without prior notice. During a hot update, data-plane gateway and sidecar proxy versions remain unchanged.
Risks of running an expired version
Running an expired ASM instance version exposes your system to security and stability risks. We recommend that you upgrade your instance to a supported version promptly. ASM does not provide security patches or bug fixes for expired versions, and technical support for them is not guaranteed. For specific instructions on how to upgrade an instance, see Upgrade an ASM instance.
