AnalyticDB:TPC-H performance testing for AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL V7.0

This topic describes how to run TPC-H queries to benchmark the vectorized query performance of AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL V7.0.

The tests described in this topic are based on the TPC-H benchmark specification but do not satisfy all of its requirements. The results cannot be compared with officially published TPC-H benchmark results.

Performance test results

The test runs 22 standard TPC-H queries against a 100 GB dataset. AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL V7.0, powered by the Alibaba Cloud Laser vector compute engine, completes all 22 queries in 128.14 seconds — roughly 5x faster than Greenplum's native compute engine at 583.85 seconds.

About TPC-H

The following description is quoted from the TPC Benchmark H (TPC-H) specification:

TPC-H is a decision support benchmark. It consists of a suite of business-oriented ad hoc queries and concurrent data modifications. The queries and the data populating the database have been chosen to have broad industry-wide relevance. This benchmark illustrates decision support systems that examine large volumes of data, execute queries with a high degree of complexity, and give answers to critical business questions.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure that you have:

Initialize the ECS data disk before use. For details, see Initialize a data disk on a Linux instance.

Generate test data

The following steps generate 100 GB of TPC-H test data and upload it to your OSS bucket.

  1. Log on to the ECS instance.

  2. Download and decompress the dbqgen.tar package. The following example uses /mnt as the data disk directory.

    # Decompress the package
    tar -xvf dbqgen.tar
  3. Configure the data generation parameters.

    1. Go to the dbqgen directory.

      cd dbqgen
    2. Open dbgen_data.sh for editing.

      vim dbgen_data.sh
    3. Press i to enter edit mode. Replace ./dbgen -s 450 -S $i -C 192 -f & with the following:

      ./dbgen -s 100 -S $i -C 32 -f &

      The -s parameter sets the data volume in GB. The -C parameter sets the number of file blocks — set it to a multiple of the number of compute nodes.

    4. Press Esc, then enter :wq to save and exit.

  4. Generate the test data. Output is stored in the dbqgen directory.

    sh dbgen_data.sh
  5. Upload the test data to OSS. If this is your first time using ossutil, see ossutil overview for installation instructions.

    ./ossutil64 cp -r <data-directory> <oss-bucket-path> --exclude "*.tbl*"

    Example:

    ./ossutil64 cp -r /mnt/dbqgen/ oss://adbpg --exclude "*.tbl*"

Create tables and import data

The following steps create the TPC-H test tables in AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL and load data from OSS.

  1. Use psql to connect to the AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL instance. For connection options, see Client connection.

  2. Create the TPC-H test tables.
