Alibaba Cloud Service Mesh (ASM) is based on native Istio and provides traffic management solutions for multi-language applications. Because the Istio community continuously releases new versions, ASM periodically updates its list of supported Istio versions. This topic describes the support policy for Istio versions in Service Mesh (ASM) and the compatibility between ASM and ACK versions.

Release cycle
ASM typically updates the list of supported Istio major versions every three months.
After a major version is released, ASM occasionally releases patch versions (such as v1.18.x.y) to provide new features and fix vulnerabilities.
ASM may automatically perform a hot update on a patch version (such as from v1.18.0.123 to v1.18.0.146) without prior notification. During an automatic hot update, the versions of the data-plane gateways and sidecar proxies remain unchanged.
Risks of expired versions
Expired ASM instances pose security and stability risks. You should upgrade your ASM instances promptly. Security patches and issue fixes are not provided for expired ASM instances, and the quality of technical support for these instances cannot be guaranteed.
