:Transfer DNS records of domain names across Alibaba Cloud accounts

Last Updated:Feb 24, 2023

This topic describes how to transfer Domain Name System (DNS) records of domain names across Alibaba Cloud accounts.

Scenarios

You can transfer DNS records of domain names across Alibaba Cloud accounts in the following scenarios:

1. Domain names and DNS records are managed by different departments in your enterprise. In most cases, domain names are managed by the legal or branding department, whereas DNS records are managed by the technical department. Different departments use different Alibaba Cloud accounts. The legal department manages the registration and renewal of domain names, and the real-name verification of domain name registrants. The technical department manages DNS records that resolve domain names to IP addresses of website servers, canonical names provided by content delivery network (CDN) service providers, or addresses of email servers. Therefore, domain names and DNS records are managed by using different Alibaba Cloud accounts.

2. Company A registers domain names with Alibaba Cloud. Due to business requirements, Company A transfers permissions that are required to manage DNS records of domain names to Company B. After the transfer, the registration and renewal of domain names, and the management of the information related to the domain names are performed by using the Alibaba Cloud account of Company A. DNS records of the domain names are managed by using the Alibaba Cloud account of Company B. In this case, Company A transfers DNS records of domain names to Company B.

3. Alibaba Cloud accounts rather than RAM users are used to transfer DNS records. Non-technical staff can use Alibaba Cloud accounts to easily transfer DNS records without the need to understand the complex syntax for using RAM users. After DNS records of domain names are transferred from Alibaba Cloud Account A to Alibaba Cloud Account B, Alibaba Cloud Account A no longer manages the DNS records. Alibaba Cloud Account A manages only the registration and renewal of domain names.

Limits

1. The transfer operation applies only to DNS records of domain names. The information related to domain name registration and paid Alibaba Cloud DNS instances are not affected.

2. After you perform the transfer operation, all DNS records of domain names within your Alibaba Cloud account are transferred to the destination Alibaba Cloud account.

3. You can transfer only the DNS records of the domain names that are registered with Alibaba Cloud by using your Alibaba Cloud account. You cannot transfer DNS records of the domain names that are not registered by using your Alibaba Cloud account or those that are not registered with Alibaba Cloud to another Alibaba Cloud account.

4. After you transfer the DNS records of the domain names that are registered by using your Alibaba Cloud account to another Alibaba Cloud account, you can reclaim the DNS records to your Alibaba Cloud account. To reclaim the DNS records, you can select Enter Domain Names Manually and enter the domain names whose DNS records you want to reclaim on the Add Multiple Domain Names tab.

5. You can transfer DNS records only across Alibaba Cloud accounts rather than RAM users.

6. You can transfer DNS records across Alibaba Cloud accounts only on the China site (aliyun.com) rather than the International site (alibabacloud.com). Cross-site transfer of DNS records is not supported.

  1. When you transfer or reclaim DNS records for a domain name that is associated with a paid Alibaba Cloud DNS instance, Alibaba Cloud DNS automatically disassociates the domain name from the paid instance. The DNS records can be transferred, but those that use paid features will become disabled. Therefore, before you perform the transfer operation, you must modify the DNS records that use paid features to comply with the standards of the free edition of Alibaba Cloud DNS.

5. On the Batch Operation History tab, find the transfer operation and click Download Log Details in the Actions column. In the downloaded file, you can view the details of the transfer operation. For example, if the operation fails, you can view the failure cause in the file.
