Elastic IP Address:Feature and limit FAQ

Last Updated:Mar 26, 2026

This topic answers frequently asked questions about the features and limits of Elastic IP Addresses (EIPs).

What is the difference between an EIP and a static public IP address of an ECS instance?

Static public IP address

EIP

Assignment

Assigned when the resource is created

Purchased and managed on its own

Lifecycle

Tied to the resource — released when the resource is deleted.

Independent — you can create, hold, and reassign it freely.

Flexibility

Can't be moved between resources

Can be associated and disassociated at any time

Internet-facing ALB instances, NLB instances, and internet NAT gateways use associated EIPs for internet access.
You can convert the static public IP address of an internet-facing ECS or CLB instance into an EIP.

How can I tell if an ECS instance is attached to a static public IP address or an EIP?

Log on to the ECS console. Select the target ECS instance and click the instance ID to go to the details page. On the details page, you can view information about the attached public IP address.

If the IP Address Owner is:

  • Public IP, the ECS instance is attached to a static public IP address.

  • Elastic IP Address, the ECS instance is attached to an EIP.

How many EIPs can I request for my account?

You can request up to 20 EIPs for each account. To request more, you can Increase Quota.

Are there limits on the number of API calls for EIPs?

Yes, there are. API calls are throttled if a user makes more than 500 API calls per day.

Can I use an EIP for website domain name resolution?

Yes, you can use an EIP for website domain name resolution. You can also set a private IP address for private DNS resolution. For more information, see Add a website record.

Why can't I edit the description of an EIP instance?

You can typically edit the description of an EIP on its details page. However, you cannot edit the description if the EIP instance is managed by a third party. For example, you cannot edit the description of an EIP that is automatically allocated when you create a public-facing Network Load Balancer (NLB).

Can I convert a BGP (Multi-ISP) EIP to a BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro EIP?

Not supported.

You can select the line type of an EIP only when you request it. The line type cannot be changed after the EIP is created.

How do I change the public IP address of an ECS instance?

Public IP address type

Instructions

Change an EIP

  1. (Optional) Apply for a new EIP.

For more information, see Apply for an EIP.

  2. Disassociate the current EIP from the ECS instance.

For more information, see Disassociate an EIP from a cloud resource.

    Important
    • After you disassociate a pay-as-you-go EIP from a cloud resource, you are still charged an EIP configuration fee. To avoid unnecessary fees, release the EIP.

    • If you no longer require a subscription EIP after you disassociate the EIP from a cloud resource, you can unsubscribe from the EIP. For more information, see Rules for unsubscribing from resources.

  3. Associate the new EIP with the ECS instance.

For more information, see Associate an EIP with an ECS instance.

Change a static public IP address

  • You can directly change the static public IP address within six hours after the ECS instance is created.

  • After six hours, you must convert the static public IP address to an EIP, detach the EIP, and then change the public bandwidth of the ECS instance to a value greater than 0 Mbps. A new static public IP address is then allocated.

Do EIPs change?

The EIP remains unchanged.

If an EIP expires or your account has an overdue payment, the EIP may be released. To retrieve the EIP, you can request a specific EIP.

If you use a static public IP address for an ECS instance, the IP address is revoked or released in the following cases: the ECS instance is released, the bandwidth of the ECS instance is set to 0 Mbps, or the instance is stopped in economical mode. When a new static public IP address is allocated, Alibaba Cloud cannot guarantee that the same IP address is allocated to your ECS instance.
If you want to assign a public IP address to different ECS instances or retain a public IP address after an ECS instance is released, we recommend that you use an EIP. Compared with a static public IP address, an EIP is more flexible. You can attach an EIP to or detach it from an ECS instance. You can also convert a static public IP address to an EIP.

What do I do if my EIP is added to the Spamhaus PBL blacklist?

For security reasons, Alibaba Cloud blocks TCP port 25 by default. To send emails, we recommend that you use Alibaba Cloud Mail.

If you use an EIP instead of Alibaba Cloud Mail and your EIP is added to a blacklist by an anti-spam organization, such as the Spamhaus Project, contact the organization to file a removal request. For example, you can file a Spamhaus PBL removal request to remove your EIP from the blacklist.
