Elastic Compute Service:Delete a custom image

Last Updated:May 15, 2026

Deleted custom images cannot create instances or re-initialize system disks. Unshare or cancel ongoing tasks before deletion.

Considerations

Note the following impacts for each deletion scenario.

Operation

Item

Custom image deletion

  • A custom image cannot be deleted if:

  • After a custom image is deleted:

    • The image can no longer be used to create instances.

    • Existing instances still run and incur fees, but their system disks cannot be re-initialized. See Re-initialize a system disk.

    • If the image was shared, other users can no longer view it, create instances from it, or re-initialize system disks of instances created from it.

    • If the image was published as a community image, the community image is also deleted. It can no longer be used to create instances, and system disks of instances created from it cannot be re-initialized.

Shared image deletion

  • Unshare the image before deletion. See Unshare a custom image.

  • After a shared image is deleted:

    • Accounts the image was shared with cannot find the image in the ECS console or through API operations.

    • Accounts the image was shared with cannot use it to create instances or replace operating systems. See Replace the operating system.

    • Accounts the image was shared with cannot re-initialize system disks of instances created from the image. See Re-initialize a system disk.

Image copy deletion

  • Deleting a source image does not affect its copies. Ongoing copy tasks can be Cancel Copy but not deleted.

  • Deleting image copies does not affect the source image.

Procedure

  1. Go to ECS console - Images.

  2. In the upper-left corner of the page, select a region and resource group.地域

  3. On the Custom Images tab, find the image that you want to delete and click Actions in the Actions column.

You can also select multiple custom images and click Delete Image at the bottom of the tab.

  4. In the Delete Image dialog box, confirm the deletion.

    Important
    • Importing a custom image creates a snapshot. You can choose to retain or delete this snapshot when deleting the image. Deleted snapshots cannot restore data.

    • Existing snapshots incur charges. To delete them, go to the Snapshots page in the ECS console. See Delete snapshot. For snapshot pricing, see Snapshot billing.

Delete snapshots that were created based on the image

To delete the snapshots together with the image, select OK in the Delete Snapshots section.

Delete instances that were created from the image

If the image has been used to create instances, select Forcefully Delete Image, set Delete Snapshots to Yes or No, and then click OK.
