This topic describes the billing methods of Hologres and how to estimate your costs.

Terms

Storage volume
Storage volume is the amount of data that you store in Hologres, excluding replicas, and is measured in gigabytes (GB). You are billed based on actual usage. Storage includes business data and metadata. You can check your bill for more details.
Computational workload
For dedicated instances, compute volume is the total amount of computing resources required for operations such as writing and querying data in Hologres. Compute volume is measured in compute units (CUs), where 1 CU is equivalent to 1 CPU core and 4 GB of memory.
Dedicated instances also support the following features, each with its own compute volume:
- Serverless Computing: Compute volume is the amount of Serverless Computing resources used to run SQL jobs. The compute volume is measured in CU-hours.
- Time-based elastic scaling: Compute volume is the amount of additional computing resources allocated during scaling. The compute volume is measured in CU-hours.
Network volume
Network volume is the amount of data transferred over the network when you use cross-region snapshot replication. Network volume is measured in gigabytes (GB).

Billing Methods

Hologres dedicated instances support two billing methods: subscription and pay-as-you-go. Both cover compute, storage, and network resources. For more information, see the following figure.

Note

Both subscription and pay-as-you-go dedicated instances support advanced features such as Serverless Computing, backup and restore, and cross-region snapshot replication. The usage of these advanced features is billed based on the actual consumption of compute, storage, and network resources.

Subscription
Based on your business requirements, estimate the required compute and storage resources, and use Subscription-based billing to use the Hologres service. For more information, see Subscription.
Pay-as-you-go
You are billed hourly for compute resources based on the instance specifications and runtime, and for storage resources based on the storage volume and duration of use. That is, you are billed once every hour. For more information, see Pay-as-you-go.
Note
You are billed for compute resources every hour, even if no tasks are running on the instance.

Billing rules for each billing item

This topic describes the detailed billing rules for each billable item and how to stop billing for Hologres instances that use the subscription and pay-as-you-go billing methods.

Gateway resources
Reserved Computing Resources for Compute Groups
Elasticity of compute group resources (scheduled and automatic)	Postpaid: You are billed based on the usage and duration of elastic resources.	You can stop using elastic features and switch to the reserved compute resources of the instance.
Serverless Computing compute resources	Postpaid: You are billed based on the usage and duration of Serverless Computing resources.	When you run SQL jobs, you can stop using Serverless Computing resources and switch to the reserved compute resources of the instance.
Standard storage	Prepaid: You are charged for the selected specifications and duration at the time of purchase. If your stored data exceeds the purchased capacity, you are billed for the excess storage based on usage. Pay-as-you-go

Compute resources	Billing starts immediately after purchase. You are billed hourly for the purchased compute specification, regardless of whether the instance is in use.	In the Hologres console, find your target instance and click Actions. Then click Stop to stop billing for the instance. For elastic compute resources, stop using time-based elastic features and switch to reserved compute resources for the instance.

Billing

The following sections describe how Hologres calculates fees for the subscription and pay-as-you-go billing methods. You can view details based on your region. For information about the billing rules and how to stop billing for each billable item, see Billing rules for each billing item.

Example scenarios:

Scenario 1
With the subscription billing method, you require 500 GB of Standard storage and 64 CUs of compute resources for six months. If you deploy your instance in the Singapore region, the upfront fee is calculated as follows: 31.970149 × 64 × 6 + 0.182090 × 500 × 6 = 12,822.80722 USD. The billing logic for Infrequent Access storage is the same.
Scenario 2
With the subscription billing method, you initially purchase 100 GB of Standard storage. However, due to rapid business growth, your storage usage reaches 200 GB in a specific hour. The excess storage is billed separately for that hour. If your instance is deployed in the Singapore region, the charge for the excess storage is calculated as follows: (200 - 100) × 0.000379 = 0.0379 USD.
Scenario 3
With the pay-as-you-go billing method, you purchase compute resources with a specification of 64 CUs. Your Infrequent Access storage usage for one hour is 100 GB. If your instance is deployed in the Singapore region, the total bill for that hour is calculated as follows: 0.182090 × 64 × 1 + 0.000055 × 100 × 1 = 11.65926 USD.

Billing Cycle

When you use Hologres, the billing cycle is as follows:

Subscription: For a subscription instance, you make an upfront payment and are billed through the associated Alibaba Cloud account. If your storage usage exceeds the purchased limit, the overage is billed hourly on a pay-as-you-go basis. These hourly charges continue until your storage usage returns to within the limit.
Pay-as-you-go billing method: The primary account for the instance receives a bill every hour.

Choose a Billing Method

Hologres offers two billing methods. You can choose one based on your business needs:

Development and test projects: For developers and analysts engaged in development and debugging, where jobs are intermittent and data volumes are small, you can use the pay-as-you-go billing method to effectively control costs and keep resource consumption within a certain range.
If your jobs are stable after development and debugging and are online for production, consider using the subscription billing method.
