Olympic Day Charity Run Powered by DataV

Alibaba Group hosted a charity run powered by DataV on June 23, 2018, to celebrate Olympic Day.

On June 23, 2018, Alibaba Group hosted a charity run that can be done both online and offline to celebrate Olympic Day. Originally to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games, Olympic Day is now celebrated to encourage people from all walks of life to get active and celebrate the beauty of sports.

Employees based in over 30 offices worldwide—from China, Europe, the U.S. to Southeast Asia—joined their own respective runs on the same day. The physical charity runs were part of a two-day campaign from June 22-23 that merged online with offline, allowing anyone with a designated step counter app to participate.

This came just after Alibaba made its debut as a TOP Partner at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 in February.

Bringing Data to Life with DataV

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the event was a giant LED display in Hangzhou, China. This giant LED screen continuously displayed data in real time, recording how many steps runners contributed to the charity runs. After the 2-day campaign, the total steps recorded were 383 million steps. With this achievement, Alibaba and the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation have committed to funding the construction of 4 running tracks for schools in poverty-stricken rural regions in China.

Leveraging its powerful and robust cloud computing capabilities, Alibaba Cloud developed a platform to provide runners with an unparalleled experience at the charity runs. Behind the real-time data records was DataV, a powerful and accessible data visualization tool by Alibaba Cloud.

With DataV, runners' data could be easily displayed as charts or scatter plots, all in real time. This made it much easier for the audience to interpret and to understand the data generated from the event.

What Is DataV?

Launched in 2012, DataV has supported real-time data dashboards for various Alibaba events, including supporting the Alibaba Singles' Day Global Shopping Festival for 7 years.

DataV is more than just a fancy tool for events and exhibitions. For e-commerce websites on Alibaba, DataV plays a crucial role in visualizing transactions and orders data for convenient analysis. It enables platform operators of Alibaba’s various e-commerce websites to apply promotion methods as quickly as possible to boom revenues on that day.

In the 2017 Singles' Day Global Shopping Festival, DataV was used to visualize logistics data for effective supply chain management. The bright lines and dots in the visualization represented transportation routes from suppliers to customers.

Conclusion

With Alibaba Cloud DataV, Big Data can be made simple and useful through visualization.

Alibaba Cloud would like to utilize technology not only to encourage citizens to attend the charity run campaign this time, but also to keep the Olympic Games running throughout the more than decade-long partnership since 2017.
