On March 20, Gartner released its Market Share: Enterprise Network Equipment by Market Segment, Worldwide, 4Q19 and 2019. The report showed that Alibaba had the largest 3Q19-4Q19 revenue change in Application Delivery Controllers, Worldwide, with 35.1%.

Load balancing services function like traffic managers in IT systems. They evenly distribute traffic to different servers by using scheduling algorithms, making them one of the key technologies to prevent network congestion.

According to the Gartner report, the overall 3Q19-4Q19 market shares of Application Delivery Controllers of Alibaba increased as the only company headquartered in Asia on the list with 35.1% [1], compared with an average decline of 12.5% in revenue for traditional load balancing vendors. Generally speaking, using traditional load balancing systems requires the purchase of all relevant hardware. This not only makes for a very steep initial investment, but it often also involves high maintenance costs in the long term. Plus, many of these traditional load balancing implementations may only offer a finite number of service connections. However, cloud-based load balancing, on the other hand, provides better performance and does not require you to purchase the underlying hardware. These systems can easily process hundreds of millions of concurrent requests. This has quickly made cloud-based load balancing the preferred choice in scenarios with high levels of traffic.

Alibaba Cloud SLB provides powerful and highly optimized traffic scheduling and elasticity. The service takes advantage of Alibaba Cloud's proprietary Apsara Cloud Network Management System as well as a high level of hardware-software integration and optimization. Alibaba Cloud optimized several of the features associated with the latest 100 GbE NICs, and required that all traffic be processed on relevant hardware to offer superior support in heavy traffic and high concurrency scenarios. All of this allows Alibaba Cloud SLB to deliver an unparalleled level of performance even in some of the most challenging of industry scenarios.

Alibaba Cloud SLB has been tested in many real-world business scenarios that involved huge traffic spikes and heighted traffic volume. During the height of the coronavirus epidemic in China, for instance, Alibaba Cloud SLB guaranteed 5.12 Tbit/s bandwidth, 800 million concurrent requests, and 1.6 billion PPS for DingTalk, Alibaba Cloud's mobile workspace platform. These service guarantees, especially the last one, have helped 10 million enterprises move their daily business operations to DingTalk, while also providing a great level of support for several different sectors and scenarios, including online education and business audio and video conferencing.

Wei Han, a senior technical expert at Alibaba Cloud, said, "Since its invention, load balancing has constantly evolved as network services have changed. Today, cloud-based load balancing has achieved both high performance and stability. In the future, cloud-based load balancing will easily be the top choice for enterprises."

Already today, Alibaba Cloud has done its part to pave the way towards this future through providing a load balancing service that offers an unparalleled level of service stability in scenarios of high traffic volume.
