Elastic Desktop Service:Update an image

Last Updated:Feb 28, 2026

Cloud computer features in Elastic Desktop Service (EDS) depend on the image each cloud computer uses. When a new image version is available, update images promptly to avoid disruption for end users.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure that you have:

  • An Alibaba Cloud account with access to the EDS console

  • At least one cloud computer with an image eligible for update

  • (For automatic push) Cloud computers that use custom images

Usage notes

Image template updates

  • An image update task takes approximately 15 minutes.

  • Do not share, copy, or modify the image while an update is in progress. Do not use the image to create cloud computers or cloud computer pools during the update. These operations use the outdated image.

Cloud computer image updates

  • A cloud computer image update takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. End users cannot use the cloud computer during the update.

  • The system updates only cloud computers that are in the Running state and not connected to any end users.

  • If the update fails, the cloud computer may not work as expected. Create snapshots before the update so that data can be restored or the image can be rolled back. For more information, see Use snapshots (public preview).

Automatic push

  • The automatic push feature supports only custom images. For system images or shared images, push updates manually.

Scheduled updates

  • The scheduled window is 00:00:00 to 05:00:00 daily. This window cannot be changed, but the day is configurable.

  • The system imposes a daily limit on the number of cloud computer images updated. If the limit is reached on a given day, select a different day.

  • If the current time is less than three hours before 00:00:00 of the following day, the following day cannot be selected.

  • If an end user is connected to the cloud computer during the scheduled window, the system does not update the image. Make sure no end users are connected during the scheduled period. For more information, see Configure a scheduled task.

  • If a scheduled update task is modified multiple times, the most recent settings take effect.

  • After a scheduled update task is created, end users receive notifications about the update time and precautions.

  • By default, the system creates snapshots three hours before the scheduled update begins. This can be configured to six hours.

  • For multiple scheduled update tasks with the same effective period, the system automatically creates snapshots for all cloud computers involved before execution.

Configure automatic push for image updates

The Auto Update switch controls whether the system automatically pushes image update tasks to end users when new versions are available. This feature applies only to custom images.

  1. Log on to the EDS console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Images Center > Image Updates.

  3. In the upper-left corner of the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. On the Image Updates page, turn the Auto Update switch on or off.

    • On: The system automatically pushes image update tasks to end users when updates are available. End users receive notifications when they log on to WUYING software clients and can decide whether to apply the update. Enabling this feature is recommended.

    • Off: Image update tasks must be pushed manually from the EDS console. After a manual push, end users receive update notifications when they log on to WUYING software clients.

    Warning

If automatic push is disabled, cloud computer images may not be updated promptly. Outdated images can cause cloud computers to stop working as expected.

Update an image template

When a new image version is released, the system pushes it to the Image Updates page. From there, update image templates and apply updated images to cloud computers.

View release notes

  1. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Images Center > Image Updates.

  2. In the upper-left corner of the top navigation bar, select a region.

  3. In the update task list, find the target version and click View Release Notes in the Actions column. The release notes include the version number, update package size, and update details.

Update the image

  1. In the update task list, find the target version and click Query Involved Custom Image and Update Progress in the Actions column. This displays the custom images eligible for the update, including their names, status, and current versions.

  2. Find the image to update and click Update in the Actions column. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.

  3. Monitor the image status. When the status changes from Updating to Available, the update is complete.

Note

Do not share, copy, or modify the image while the update is in progress.

Update cloud computer images

After an image template is updated, apply the new image to cloud computers. Two methods are available: immediate update and scheduled update.

Update a single cloud computer

  1. In the update task list, find the target version and click View Involved Cloud Computer and Progress in the Actions column. This displays cloud computers eligible for the update, including names, office network IDs, current image versions, and any pending update tasks.

  2. Find the cloud computer and click Update in the Actions column. Alternatively, select the cloud computer and click Immediate/Schedule Update at the bottom of the list.

  3. In the dialog box, review the update precautions and select an update method:

    • Immediate update: The system updates the image right away. The cloud computer restarts automatically during the update. When the update completes, the cloud computer returns to its previous state.

    • Scheduled update: The system updates the image during the next scheduled window (00:00:00 to 05:00:00).

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

Update multiple cloud computers

  1. In the update task list, find the target version and click View Involved Cloud Computer and Progress in the Actions column.

  2. Select the cloud computers to update and click Immediate/Schedule Update at the bottom of the list.

  3. In the dialog box, review the update precautions and select an update method. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update. During the update, the system automatically restarts each cloud computer. When the update completes, each cloud computer returns to its previous state.

Push image updates manually

If automatic push is disabled, push update notifications to end users manually. Manual push allows skipping to the latest version.

  1. In the update task list, find the target version and click Start Push in the Actions column. End users receive the update notification when they next log on to WUYING software clients.

  2. To stop pushing a notification, click Stop Push in the Actions column.
