Elastic Desktop Service:Update Cloud Computer, Shared Cloud Computer, or Image to ASP

Last Updated:Jun 11, 2026

Alibaba Cloud's self-developed Adaptive Streaming Protocol (ASP) excels in its streaming engine, compression algorithms, network transport, and multi-platform SDKs. For an improved user experience, we recommend that you update your non-ASP cloud computers, Shared Cloud Computer, or custom images to ASP at no additional charge. This topic describes the update process and related considerations.

Background information

Benefits of ASP

The ASP protocol can provide excellent performance, high reliability, and enhanced security for streaming. ASP supports TLS-encrypted transmission based on the Tongsuo cryptographic library, protecting data in transit between cloud computers and client terminals. The ASP technical design integrates graphics command streams, graphics streams, and audio and video streams. The ASP protocol integrates multiple key technologies, such as image analysis, encoding, live streaming media, and network quality of service (QoS) optimization. The protocol also supports multi-platform SDKs.

Cloud computers updated to ASP provide the following benefits:

  • Faster connections that start in seconds, without relying on third-party components.

  • Improved audio and video call quality, featuring high-fidelity audio, low latency, and support for popular communication applications such as DingTalk and WeChat.

  • Higher display resolution, with support for 4K ultra HD displays and lossless image quality.

  • More comprehensive status monitoring with a visual display of metrics such as latency, upstream and downstream bandwidth, and frame rate.

For more information, see ASP.

Update duration

Updating each cloud computer takes approximately 30 minutes.

Fees

  • Updating a cloud computer, Shared Cloud Computer, or custom image to ASP is free of charge.

  • After a successful update, the fees for the cloud computer or Shared Cloud Computer remain the same as before the update.

Update impact

  • The features of a cloud computer or Shared Cloud Computer do not change after the update to ASP.

  • During the update of a cloud computer or Shared Cloud Computer, you cannot manage the resource in the console, and end users cannot connect to a cloud computer that is in the Updating state.

  • Updating a Shared Cloud Computer

    • If you upgrade a pay-as-you-go Shared Cloud Computer, the existing cloud computers within the Shared Cloud Computer are not upgraded. Instead, the cloud computer template associated with the Shared Cloud Computer is upgraded. This ensures that new Shared Cloud Computer created from the cloud computer template after the upgrade use the ASP protocol.

    • If you upgrade a subscription Shared Cloud Computer, the Shared Cloud Computer within the Shared Cloud Computer and the cloud computer template associated with the Shared Cloud Computer are also upgraded. If you have enabled an auto-scaling policy for the Shared Cloud Computer, existing auto-scaled cloud computers within the Shared Cloud Computer are not upgraded. However, new cloud computers that are automatically created when auto-scaling conditions are met will use the ASP protocol.

  • You cannot create cloud computers from a custom image while it is being updated.

Recommendations

  • We recommend first updating a single cloud computer or Shared Cloud Computer. If the update is successful, you can then update the remaining resources.

  • You can update a custom image directly. Alternatively, you can create a new custom image from a cloud computer that has already been updated to ASP. For more information about how to create a custom image, see Create an image.

  • After the update, to ensure the best experience, advise end users to use the latest version of the Alibaba Cloud Workspace terminal.

Prerequisites

Before you start, ensure the cloud computer, Shared Cloud Computer, or custom image meets the following requirements:

  • The cloud computers to be upgraded, Shared Cloud Computer, or custom images use a Windows operating system and do not use the ASP protocol.

  • The cloud computer is in the Stopped, Running, or Maintaining state, and no end user is connected.

  • You must perform the update by using an Alibaba Cloud account, not a RAM user.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the EDS enterprise console.

  2. Navigate to the update page using one of the following methods:

    • If this is your first update, click Update Now in the Introduction of Cloud Computer Update dialog box that appears in the console.

    • In the toolbar on the right side of the console, click the image icon. On the System Message tab, click View to the right of the Cloud desktop free upgrade to ASP desktop message.

    • In the upper-left corner of the Elastic Desktop Service page, click View next to the update notification.

      Note

This notification is selectively displayed based on your account status. Your UI may differ. If the notification does not appear, use another method.

  3. On the Update Cloud Computer page, select an update method.

    Full update

Update all eligible cloud computers or Shared Cloud Computer at once.

    1. In the Upgrade Scope section, click All.

    2. Select an update time:

      • Update Now: This option automatically updates cloud computers or Shared Cloud Computer that are in the Stopped, Running, or Maintaining state and have no connected end users.

      • Scheduled Upgrade: You must set the Cycle and Upgrade At. By default, a scheduled upgrade task is valid for one month.

Update by selecting Shared Cloud Computer

Update a subset of your cloud computers or Shared Cloud Computer.

    1. In the Upgrade Scope section, click Cloud Computer/Computer Pool Upgrade.

    2. In the Cloud Computer IDs to Be Upgraded or computer pool ID to upgrade field, enter the ID of the cloud computer or computer pool to update. To enter multiple IDs, separate them with a comma.

    Update custom images

    1. In the Upgrade Scope section, click Custom Image.
