Alibaba Cloud is upgrading the basic protection rule module in Web Application Firewall (WAF) 3.0. This page explains what changes, what is preserved automatically, and what action you may need to take before the upgrade.

What changes
After the upgrade:
Per-rule control: Change the status and action of each basic protection rule individually, rather than at the group level.
Hybrid cloud support: Configure custom protection rules in hybrid cloud scenarios.
Feature replacement: The protection rule group feature is replaced by the engine configuration feature.
Billing: If your WAF instance uses pay-as-you-go billing, you are no longer charged for protection rule groups or protocol compliance.
Impact on your existing configuration
Rule groups linked to a protection template
If your protection rule group is associated with a protection template, the group rules are automatically synchronized to the Engine Configuration section of that template. No action is required — your rules are not affected.
Rule groups not linked to a protection template
If your protection rule group is not associated with a protection template, it is unpublished after the upgrade.
To back up your rules:
Create a protection template.
Associate the protection rule group with the new template.
