Certificate Management Service:How do I change a single-domain certificate that is purchased or issued to a wildcard certificate?

Last Updated:Mar 31, 2026

SSL certificates cannot be changed from one domain name type to another after purchase or issuance. If your order was placed within seven calendar days, request a refund and purchase a new wildcard certificate. For eligibility details and the refund process, see Refund policies.

Before switching: confirm you need a wildcard certificate

Switch to a wildcard certificate if you:

  • Need to secure multiple subdomains under the same domain

  • Plan to add new subdomains frequently

  • Want to manage fewer certificates

If you only need to secure one domain or a small, fixed set of subdomains, a single-domain certificate is likely sufficient.

Next steps

After your refund is approved:

  1. Purchase a new wildcard certificate from SSL Certificates Service.

  2. Submit a certificate application with your wildcard domain (for example, *.example.com).

  3. Complete domain ownership verification and wait for the certificate to be issued.

  4. Install the new certificate on your server.
