Server Migration Center:resolve missing data disk or incorrect drive letter after windows server migration

Last Updated:Jun 04, 2026

After you use SMC to migrate a Windows server, a data disk may be missing or have an incorrect drive letter. Use Windows Disk Management to reassign or correct the drive letter.

Symptom

After you migrate a Windows server and start the instance, a data disk is missing or has an incorrect drive letter.

Cause

A faulty or missing disk driver can prevent the operating system from detecting the disk, which can cause the drive letter to disappear or be assigned incorrectly.

Solutions

  • If a data disk drive letter is missing, reassign it in Disk Management.

    1. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.

    2. Right-click the data disk without a drive letter, then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

    3. Click Add, then assign a drive letter.

  • If a data disk drive letter is incorrect, change it in Disk Management.

    1. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.

    2. Right-click the data disk with the incorrect drive letter, then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

    3. Click Change, then select a new drive letter.
