ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server runs on official Microsoft SQL Server versions. The minor engine version of an instance maps directly to the corresponding Microsoft SQL Server build. This page lists all available minor engine versions with links to the official Microsoft documentation for each.

When to update
Update to a newer minor engine version to get the latest security patches, cumulative bug fixes, and performance improvements from Microsoft. Each Cumulative Update (CU) builds on the previous one, so the latest CU for your major version provides the most complete set of fixes. A General Distribution Release (GDR) contains only critical security fixes and is a lighter update option when you want to minimize change risk.

Transparent data encryption (TDE) compressed backups created on SQL Server 2019 CU16 or later use an updated format. These backups cannot be restored to instances running CU15 or earlier. Backups from versions earlier than CU16 can be restored to instances running CU16 or later without issue. For details, see the official Microsoft documentation.
