ApsaraDB RDS:Set the log backup frequency to every 5 minutes

Last Updated:Feb 28, 2025

ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server supports the log backup frequency of every 5 minutes. If your business has high requirements for recovery point objective (RPO), we recommend that you set the log backup frequency to every 5 minutes. The setting takes effect immediately after you complete the setting. You can change the log backup frequency to every 30 minutes based on your business requirements. The change process is lossless and does not interrupt your workloads.

Architecture

Benefits

  • Enhanced data protection: The data protection window is reduced from 30 minutes to 5 minutes, which significantly enhances data security.

  • Optimized log backup load distribution: The setting helps evenly distribute the backup tasks within every 30 minutes, which improves system efficiency.

  • Reduced potential risks: More frequent backups can effectively reduce the risk of data loss in cases of unexpected operations or extreme scenarios.

Limits

  • RDS instances that run SQL Server 2008 R2 are not supported.

  • Serverless RDS instances and RDS instances that use shared instance types are not supported. For more information, see Serverless ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server instances and Instance families.

  • If the secondary database preferred backup mode is enabled for your RDS instance, the log backup frequency of every 5 minutes and incremental backup are not supported. For more information, see Backup description.

  • If you have upgraded the entry point to the Backup Strategy tab, you cannot set the log backup frequency to every 5 minutes. For more information, see Back up an ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server instance.

Billing rules

Each RDS instance is allocated a free quota on backup storage. If the total size of the backup files of your RDS instance does not exceed the free quota, you are not charged for backup storage. If the total size of the backup files exceeds the free quota, you are charged for the excess storage. For more information about the free quota and billing rules, see Backup storage fees.

Procedure

Go to the Instances page. Find the RDS instance that you want to manage and click the instance ID. In the left-side navigation pane of the page that appears, click Backup and Restoration. In the Data Backup Settings section of the Backup Strategy tab, click Edit. In the dialog box that appears, set the Log Backup Frequency parameter to Every 5 Minutes.
