ApsaraDB RDS:[EOS/Discontinuation] Change from a VPC to the classic network for an ApsaraDB RDS instance is unavailable

Last Updated:Mar 28, 2026
This feature was discontinued on March 22, 2022. This page is kept as a historical record.

As of March 22, 2022, Alibaba Cloud no longer supports changing the network type of an ApsaraDB RDS instance from a virtual private cloud (VPC) to the classic network.

ApsaraDB RDS supports two network types:

  • Virtual private cloud (VPC): Each VPC is an isolated virtual network. You can configure route tables, CIDR blocks, and gateways in a VPC. You can also connect your data center to a VPC using Express Connect circuits or virtual private networks (VPNs), forming a virtual data center that supports migrating workloads to the cloud with no downtime. For more information, see What is a VPC?

  • Classic network: RDS instances on the classic network cannot be isolated by network settings. Access control relies entirely on IP address whitelists or security groups.

For more information about network types, see FAQ about network types.

Discontinued feature

Changing the network type of an ApsaraDB RDS instance from VPC to classic network is discontinued.

Effective date

March 22, 2022

Impacts

  • You cannot change the network type of an RDS instance from VPC to classic network from March 22, 2022.

  • RDS instances already on the classic network are not affected by this change.

Suggestions

VPCs provide stronger network isolation and more secure environments than the classic network. If your RDS instance is on the classic network, change its network type to VPC. For instructions, see Change the network type of an ApsaraDB RDS for MySQL instance.
