PolarDB:Change a single-zone deployment to a three-zone deployment

Last Updated:Mar 30, 2026

A single-zone PolarDB-X 2.0 instance stores all data in one availability zone, leaving the service vulnerable to zone-level failures. Migrating to a three-zone deployment distributes data across three separate zones within the same region, significantly increasing availability and fault tolerance.

How it works

When you initiate the migration, PolarDB-X replicates data across data centers to establish copies in the two additional zones. Migration time depends on the size of your data.

After data replication is complete, the instance switches to the new three-zone topology according to the switching mode you select.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure that you have:

  • A PolarDB-X 2.0 instance deployed in a single zone

  • Sufficient permissions to modify instance configuration in the PolarDB for Xscale console

Migrate to three zones

  1. Log on to the PolarDB for Xscale console.

  2. In the top navigation bar, select the region where the target instance is located.

  3. On the Instances page, click the PolarDB-X 2.0 tab.

  4. Find the target instance and click its ID.

  5. In the left-side navigation pane, select Basic Information. In the upper-right corner of the Topology Information section, click Migrate Across Zones.

  6. In the Migrate Across Zones dialog box, click Three-zone. Select the target zones and a switching mode.

  7. Click OK. The migration task starts. On the Basic Information page, monitor progress in the Topology Information section. The migration is complete when the topology displays the new three-zone configuration.

Note

Data is migrated across data centers during this task. Total migration time varies based on the size of the migrated data.

Verify the result

After migration completes, confirm success on the Basic Information page by checking that the Topology Information section shows the instance distributed across three zones.
