Object Storage Service:Data storage requirement assessment

Last Updated:Mar 20, 2026

Storage workloads differ in access frequency, performance demands, and compliance obligations. Choosing the wrong storage class for a workload results in either performance bottlenecks or unnecessary costs. Assess each workload against the five factors below before selecting a storage class or configuring lifecycle rules.

Assessment factors

FactorWhat to evaluateWhy it matters
Data volumeTotal size of data across all workloadsDetermines storage capacity and baseline costs
Access frequency and response timeHow often data is read or written, and the required latencyOSS storage classes are priced by access tier; matching access patterns to the right tier avoids overpaying
IOPS and throughputRead/write operations per second and data transfer rate required by the workloadDifferent storage classes support different performance levels; selecting the right class prevents both performance bottlenecks and unnecessary costs
Data importanceWhether data is critical or subject to regulatory requirementsCritical and regulated data must be stored with higher durability guarantees and retained for extended periods
Data sensitivityWhether data requires protection against unauthorized or accidental modificationHighly sensitive data requires both durability and security controls; treat these requirements as equally important as storage costs

Assess workloads by access pattern

Evaluate each distinct workload separately. Workloads with different access patterns, performance requirements, or compliance obligations map to different storage solutions.

The following table shows common workload categories and their storage priorities:

Access patternTypical workloadsStorage priority
Frequently accessedActive media files, active user files, real-time analyticsLow latency, high IOPS
Infrequently accessedMonthly reports, older log files, backup copies for occasional retrievalLower cost; longer response time acceptable
Archive and complianceAudit logs, regulated records retained for yearsDurability, cost-effective long-term retention

Complete this assessment before selecting a storage class or configuring lifecycle rules. The results give you a clear basis for matching storage options to workload requirements and cost targets.
