Managed Service for Grafana:New features of Grafana v10.0.x

Last Updated:Feb 22, 2024

Grafana v10.0.x improves the usability of Grafana by upgrading the user interface, adding new panels, and optimizing data display.

Note

This topic describes only several updates in Grafana v10.0.x. For more information, see Grafana official documentation.

This topic describes the following updates in Grafana v10.0.x:

  • Updated panels

  • Updated dashboards

  • Updated navigation

  • Updated alerting

New panels

XY Chart panels

Grafana v10.0.x adds new XY Chart panels, including line charts and scatter charts.image.png

XY Trend panel

Grafana v10.0.x adds the XY Trend panel, which allows you to display trends in which the x-axis is an incrementing numeric value instead of time. The Trend panel resolves issues that cannot be resolved by the Time Series or XY Chart panels. For example, you can plot function graphs, revolutions per minute (RPM) or torque curves, and supply-demand relationships.image.png

Datagrid panel

Grafana v10.0.x adds the Datagrid panel, which allows you to edit data in a Grafana dashboard to customize data. You can use the Datagrid panel to fine-tune the data read from a data source or create new data.

The edited data is saved in the form of a snapshot and is not updated over time.

After you save the data edited in the Datagrid panel, you can select Dashboard from the Data source drop-down list in a new panel and use the fine-tuned data as the data source. You can also transform the data edited in the Datagrid panel.image.png

Canvas panel

The Canvas panel is a new panel that combines the power of Grafana with the flexibility of custom elements. The Canvas panel is an extensible form-built panel that allows you to explicitly place elements in static and dynamic layouts to design custom visualizations and overlay data. This level of customization goes beyond what standard Grafana panels offer. For example, you can place an image layer, overlay text that is updated from a Grafana data source, and display icons whose colors change in response to the data.image.png

Logs panel

Grafana v10.0.x further optimizes the display of log entries. The following features or components are added:

  • Actions to log details. You can easily copy lines and show only the selected labels, which allows you to focus on specific information without leaving the log context section.

  • The Wrap Lines switch, which allows you to wrap long text so that you can read and analyze log entry context directly in the log context section.

  • The Open in split view button, which allows you to execute the context query for a log entry in a split screen in Explore.

    1. You can easily copy the log content and wrap long text.

    2. After you click a log entry, the context of the log entry is shown. You can click Open in split view to open a split screen.

New dashboards

Multi-level folders

Grafana v10.0.x supports multi-level folders to enable hierarchical management of a large number of dashboards.

Important

If you move a subfolder to a new parent folder, the subfolder inherits the permissions of the new parent folder.

Mixed data sources

In Explore of Grafana V10.0.x, you can select Mixed from the Data source drop-down list. Then, you can select a data source for each query. The queries are displayed on the same page.

Data source selection

  • When you select a data source in Grafana v10.0.x, you can click Open advanced datasource picker to go to the Select data source dialog box for a clearer view of available data sources.

  • When you edit or create a panel in Grafana v10.0.x, in the Select data source dialog box, you can drag a file to the upload section or click the upload section to select a file to upload. Multiple file types are supported, including CSV, TXT, XLSX, and JSON.

Annotation: time regions and annotation filtering

Grafana v10.0.x allows you to add time regions in the Time Series panel. Time regions provide a more contextualized experience. You can highlight specific days of the week. For example, you can highlight Monday to Friday to display work weeks. You can also highlight specific parts of the day, such as night, work hours, or any period that you want to define for each day. This allows you to quickly locate specific parts of the day or ignore highlighted parts of the time series.

Procedure: On the Annotations tab in the dashboard settings, add an annotation and apply it.

The annotation in the preceding figure highlights 15:00 to 19:00 for each day. The following figure shows the results.

You can define different time regions based on your business requirements.

You can filter dashboard annotations to apply annotations to all panels, the selected panels, or panels except for the selected panels.image.png

Updated navigation

Search box

Grafana v10.0.x adds a search box at the top of all pages, which allows you to search for and access all pages and recently used dashboards.

Connections

Grafana v10.0.x allows you to create and manage data sources on the new Connections page on which data source-related tools are put together for easy access. You can access the Connections page from the left-side navigation pane.

image.png

On the Add new connection tab, all data source plug-ins are displayed. After you install a plug-in, you can create a data source on the page of the plug-in.

The Data sources tab is the same as that of Grafana v9.0.x.

Important

To install a plug-in, you must log on by using the administrator account.

Grafana v10.0.x still supports the original menu used for creating a data source in previous versions. When you create and manage data sources by using the original menu, Grafana prompts you to go to the Connections page for streamlined operations.
