Fraud Detection:Variable Center

Last Updated:Apr 25, 2026

This topic introduces the Variable Center.

Background

  • A variable, unlike a constant, is the output of a dynamic calculation. It uses input parameters and applies a specific logic to compute a value. In the decision engine, the calculation logic for a variable can include function-based calculations (for example, extracting an email suffix), calls to business scenario recognition models (for example, the Registration Risk Recognition - Enhanced model), and cumulative metrics (for example, the number of accounts associated with an IP address within 1 hour).

  • Use cases: The Alibaba Cloud expert team periodically adds and updates variables in the Variable Center. When you configure a policy, you can select the variables you need from the Variable Center. You can design and configure custom policies with variables, even without a background in algorithms or software development. For example, to use a risk recognition model for a registration event, you can use the "Registration Risk Recognition_Enhanced_Score" variable.

Variable Selection

To associate a variable with an event, use the Variable Selection feature. The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Select the variable to associate. After you click the variable name, the View variable details panel appears on the right and displays information such as the variable source, the cumulative number of risk detection calls, runtime, billing method, applicable regions, and variable description. After you confirm the details, click Next: Continue Variable Association. Step 2: Configure the association settings to create a variable association. On the Variable Association page, complete the following fields: Select event (for example, a registration event), Enter variable name, Variable description, and variable field (select the corresponding field from the event, such as ip). When you finish, click OK. Step 3: Use the associated variable in a policy. When you select the left variable in a policy condition, expand the Custom variable category. You can then view and select your associated variable, such as ip_province_name.

Important

The decision engine provides two methods for Variable Selection:

1. In the Variable Center, select a variable and go to its details page to create a Variable Association, as described above.

2. On the Variable Selection page in Variable Management, click Add associated variable to create a Variable Association.
