You can create a peering connection between a virtual border router (VBR) and a virtual private cloud (VPC) to enable communication between private networks.

Initiator and acceptor

A VBR-to-VPC connection is established by using an initiator and an acceptor. Only the initiator can initiate the peering connection. The acceptor must wait for the initiator to initiate the peering connection. The initiator and acceptor are only used to control how a peering connection is established. Data transmission between the initiator and acceptor is bidirectional. Therefore, after a peering connection is established, both the initiator and acceptor can send and receive data.

For a VBR-to-VPC connection, the system automatically creates the initiator and acceptor and sends connection requests from the initiator to the acceptor to establish the connection. You do not need to manually configure the initiator to send connection requests.

The following table describes the differences between an initiator and an acceptor.
Item Initiator Acceptor
Connect to a VPC that belongs to the same region Free of charge Free of charge
Connect to a VPC that belongs to another region Charged Free of charge
Whether the configuration of the peer is required before a connection is initiated Yes Yes
Initiate the connection Supported Not supported
Send messages to the peer after the connection is established Supported Supported

Connection status

The initiator of a peering connection sends a request to the acceptor. After the acceptor accepts the request, the connection is established.

The following table describes the connection status.
Description Connection status at the initiator side Connection status at the acceptor side
Initiate the connection Connecting Accepting
Connection established Activated Activated
Closing the connection Suspending Suspending
Connection closed Suspended Suspended
Initiate the connection again Activating Activating
Connection established Activated Activated

Billing

Billing method Description Upgrade/downgrade Expiration or overdue payment
Subscription You are charged based on the subscription billing method. Unit: USD/month.

Renewal is supported.

  • An initiator is suspended and stops forwarding network traffic 15 days after it expires. If you do not settle the overdue payment 15 days after the initiator is suspended, it is automatically released. The system sends notifications one day, three days, and seven days after the initiator expires. The system also sends notifications one day, three days, and seven days before the initiator is released.
  • After you settle the overdue payment, the initiator immediately starts providing services.
  • If you do not settle the overdue payment within 15 days after the initiator is suspended, the initiator is released. In addition, the configurations are deleted and cannot be restored.

You are charged only for the initiator of a VBR-to-VPC connection. You are not charged for the acceptor. The fees vary based on the maximum bandwidth of the initiator and region.

  • You are not charged if the initiator and acceptor are deployed in the same region.
