Edge Security Acceleration:Manage scenario policies

Last Updated:Mar 20, 2025

The scenario policies allow you to address business peak situations such as new game launches and e-commerce promotions. With Major Event templates, DDoS protection policies are adjusted automatically. This adjustment ensures dynamic adaptation to traffic fluctuations during the designated activity period, reduces false positives for normal users, and maintains continuous business operations during high-concurrency periods.

Before you begin

  • Scenario policies are only available for websites on Enterprise plans and use best-effort DDoS protection.

  • If you apply a basic DDoS protection policy during a major event, normal requests may be blocked. The Major Events template enables the automatic adjustment of DDoS protection policies based on the following logic:

    • When a major event begins, the Major Events template automatically logs the configurations for the HTTP DDoS Attack Protection and Deep Learning and Protection parameters, and then disables these two features.

    • At the end of the event, the Major Events template restores the configurations of these two features.

  • You can create up to 10 scenario policies in each Alibaba Cloud account.

Create a scenario policy

  1. Log on to the ESA console, and in the left-side navigation pane, choose Global Settings > Scenario Policies.

  2. On the Scenario Policies page, click Create Scenario Policy. On the Create Scenario Policy page, specify the Policy Name, Effective Period, and Associated Websites parameters.

Description of the Create Scenario Policy page parameters:

    • Policy Name

The name of the custom policy. The name can contain letters, digits, underscores_, and hyphens-.

    • Policy Template

The default value is Major Events, which is suitable for traffic surge scenarios such as new game launching and e-commerce promotions.

    • Effective Period

The validity period of the policy. The effective periods of multiple scenario policies cannot overlap.

    • Associated Websites

    • The websites for which you create the policy. You can specify only websites that use Enterprise plans.

  3. Click OK.

  4. This policy is automatically enabled once created. You can view the policy on the Scenario Policies page and check the Status column of the policy to determine whether the policy takes effect. A policy may have the following states:

    1. Pending Enabled: The policy does not take effect. The current time is earlier than the start time of the specified validity period.

    2. Enabled: The policy is in effect. The current time is within the specified validity period.

    3. Expired: The policy has expired. The current time is later than the specified validity period.

    4. Disabled: The policy is disabled. The policy does not take effect even if the current time is within the specified validity period.
