This topic describes how to resolve an RPC component exception on a Windows ECS instance.

Background

Remote Desktop Services relies on the operating system's RPC component. If this component fails, Remote Desktop Services cannot function correctly, preventing you from logging in to the instance by using the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).

Symptoms

You can check the status of the RPC component on your Windows ECS instance in Windows Task Manager. When the RPC component is running correctly, its status is Running.

Solutions

Important
  • Before you perform high-risk operations, such as modifying the configurations or data of an Alibaba Cloud instance, check the disaster recovery and fault tolerance capabilities of the instance to ensure data security. We recommend that you create snapshots in advance. For information about snapshots, see Overview.

  • If you granted specific users the permissions on sensitive information, such as usernames and passwords, or submitted sensitive information in the Alibaba Cloud Management Console, we recommend that you modify the sensitive information at the earliest opportunity.

Method 1: Restore from a system disk snapshot

If you created a system disk snapshot while the RPC component on your Windows ECS instance was running correctly, you can use the snapshot to restore the RPC component. For detailed instructions, see Roll back a cloud disk by using a snapshot.

Method 2: Re-initialize the system disk

You can re-initialize the system disk of the Windows ECS instance in the ECS console. This process restores the system disk to its initial state and returns the RPC component to normal. For detailed instructions, see Re-initialize a system disk (reset the operating system).

Important

Re-initializing a system disk erases all data on it. Before you proceed, create a snapshot of the system disk. After the system disk is re-initialized, you can create a cloud disk from this snapshot and attach it to the Windows ECS instance to access the data from the original system disk.
