Elastic Compute Service:Enable the async replication feature

Last Updated:Nov 20, 2023

After you create a replication pair, you must enable the async replication feature to activate the pair. After the pair is activated, data is asynchronously replicated from the primary disk to the secondary disk. This topic describes how to enable the async replication feature for a replication pair.

Prerequisites

  • If you want to use automatic synchronization by clicking OK when you enable async replication for a replication pair, make sure that the pair is in the Created, Syncing, Normal, or Stopped state.

  • If you want to use manual synchronization by clicking Copy Data when you enable async replication for a replication pair, make sure that the pair is in the Created, One-time Syncing, or Stopped state.

Background information

If a replication pair is added to a replication pair-consistent group, async replication cannot be separately enabled for the pair. You can only batch manage all replication pairs in the group together. For more information, see Activate async replication for replication pair-consistent groups.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the Elastic Block Storage (EBS) console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Enterprise-level Features > Async Replication.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region. Example: China (Shanghai).

You can select the region of a primary or secondary disk to view the list of replication pairs.

  4. In the replication pair list, find the created replication pair that you want to activate and click Activate in the Actions column.

    Note

If you want to batch activate multiple replication pairs, select the replication pairs and click Batch Activate in the lower part of the page.

  5. In the Activate Replication Pair dialog box, click one of the following buttons to activate the replication pair:

    • Create Snapshot: The system creates a snapshot for the secondary disk to back up data.

      Warning

After the replication pair is activated, data stored on the secondary disk is overwritten. To prevent data loss, we recommend that you create a snapshot to back up data stored on the secondary disk before you activate the replication pair.

    • Copy Data: The system immediately replicates data once, and then stops the replication pair after data is replicated. Subsequently, you can manually synchronize data or have data automatically synchronized from the primary disk to the secondary disk based on your business requirements.

    • OK: The system periodically replicates data based on the 15-minute recovery point objective (RPO) of the replication pair to synchronize data between the primary disk and secondary disk.

The first time you activate a replication pair, the replication pair enters the Initial Syncing state. Wait until data is synchronized from the primary disk to the secondary disk.

After the replication pair is activated and data is initially synchronized between the primary disk and secondary disk, the state of the replication pair changes to Normal. Subsequently, the system asynchronously replicates data from the primary disk to the secondary disk at an interval of 15 minutes for disaster recovery purposes. You can check when data was last replicated from the primary disk to the secondary disk in the Last Data Recovery Point in Time column corresponding to the replication pair.
