Apply for a license for authorizing multi-user sessions

1. Log on to a Windows ECS instance. For more information, see Overview.
2. Open Server Manager. On the Server Manager page, click All Servers, right-click the instance that you want to activate, and then select RD Licensing Manager.
3. On the RD Licensing Manager page, right-click the instance and select Properties.
   

   Note: If the instance is not displayed in RD Licensing Manager, choose Action > Connect and enter the IP address of the instance.

   
4. In the Properties dialog box, select Web Browser from the Connection method drop-down list, record the Product ID that is required for obtaining a server license.
   
5. Click the Required Information tab, set parameters, and then click OK.
6. Access Remote Desktop Services and select English. In the Select Option section, select Activate a license server. Then, click Next to start the registration and go to the remote desktop license server activation wizard.
   
7. Enter the product ID, set other parameters, and then click Next. Confirm the product information and click Next.
8. Record the license server ID and click Yes.
   
9. If the license server ID is unavailable, select Enterprise agreement from the License Program drop-down list. Confirm the information and click Next.
   
10. Configure the following parameters and click Next:
    • Product Type: In this example, select Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services Per User client access license.
    • Quantity: In this example, enter 999.
    • Agreement Number: Purchase a license at the official Microsoft website.
      
11. Record the license server ID and license key pack ID and click Finish.

Activate the ECS instance

1. Log on to the Windows ECS instance. Open Server Manager. On the Server Manager page, click All Servers, right-click the instance, and then select RD Licensing Manager
2. On the RD Licensing Manager page, right-click the instance and select Activate Server.
3. In the Activate Server Wizard, click Next.
4. Select Web Browser from the Connection method drop-down list and click Next.
   
5. Enter the license server ID and click Next.
   

   Note: The license server ID is obtained in Step 8 in the "Apply for a license for authorizing multi-user sessions" section.

6. Select Start Install Licenses Wizard now and click Next.
7. Enter the license key pack ID and click Next.
   

   Note: The license key pack ID is obtained in Step 11 in the "Apply for a license for authorizing multi-user sessions" section.

8. After you configure parameters in the Activate Server Wizard, Click Finish

Configure the licensing server for the remote desktop session host

1. Log on to the Windows ECS instance. Open Server Manager. On the Server Manager page, click All Servers, right-click the instance, and then select RD Licensing Diagnoser
2. "the licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured" is displayed in the Problem column in the RD Licensing Diagnoser Information section, as shown in the following figure.
   
3. In the Run dialog box, enter gpedit.msc to open Local Group Policy Editor.
4. On the Local Group Policy Editor page, choose Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Service > Remote Desktop Session Host > Licensing. Find Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers and Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode.
   
5. Set Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers to Enabled, enter the private IP address or hostname of the ECS instance in the License servers to use field, and then click OK.
   
6. Set Remote Desktop licensing mode to Enabled, select Per User from the Specify the licensing mode for the RD Session Host server drop-down list, and then click OK.
   

   Note: If a prompt indicating that an error related to the remote desktop license appears, select Per Device from the Specify the licensing mode for the RD Session Host server drop-down list and click OK.

   
7. Run cmd and run the gpupdate /force command to forcibly start Local Group Policy Editor. Restart the instance and the configuration process is complete.
