This topic lists the regions and zones for Elastic Compute Service.
Background
To learn about regions and zones, see Regions and zones.
To view a map of Alibaba Cloud's global infrastructure, see Alibaba Cloud's Global Infrastructure.
How to select a region
When purchasing an ECS instance, select a region based on the following factors. If you select the wrong region, you can create resources in the correct region and then release the resources in the current region. Alternatively, you can migrate the service. For instructions, see Migrate ECS instances across or within accounts.
Factors | Description |
Geographic location and user proximity |
|
Internal network communication between cloud products | When other cloud products and ECS instances are in the same region, they can communicate through a VPC. This private network communication is faster than using the public network and does not incur data transfer costs. Important If you have already configured network connectivity between cloud products by using a cloud networking service, you can disregard this factor.
|
Access from China regions to ECS instances in other countries and regions | ECS instances in China regions, including China (Hong Kong) and China (Macao) but excluding Taiwan, may experience high network latency and potential packet loss when accessing ECS instances in other countries and regions over the public network. Deploy your services in the same region to avoid these issues. |
Resource pricing |
|
Product features | New ECS features are often released as public previews in select regions. To try these new features, you must create ECS instances in the specified regions. For a record of feature releases, see Release notes. |
How to select a zone
You must select a zone when you create or purchase an Alibaba Cloud resource. You cannot change a resource's zone once it is created. To change the zone for an ECS instance, you can migrate it. For more information, see Change an instance type across availability zones.
Zones within the same region are interconnected over an internal network, but each zone is isolated for fault tolerance. A failure in one zone does not affect other zones. Whether to deploy in the same or different zones depends on your disaster recovery and latency requirements.
-
For high disaster recovery, deploy instances across different zones in the same region.
-
For low network latency, deploy instances in the same zone.
The following figure shows a typical architecture for disaster recovery across zones. In this architecture, both ECS and File Storage NAS use a multi-zone primary/secondary solution to ensure high availability.
Supported regions and availability zones
The following tables list all regions and availability zones supported by Elastic Compute Service. The supported regions and availability zones may vary by cloud product. To learn about the regions and availability zones supported by a specific cloud product, refer to its documentation.

Query available regions
You can call the DescribeRegions operation to query the regions where Elastic Compute Service is available for purchase.
The following is an example CLI command. Replace {RegionId} with a valid region ID from the tables above.
aliyun ecs DescribeRegions --region {RegionId}Query AZ resources
You can call the DescribeZones operation to query the availability zone information and supported resource information for Elastic Compute Service in a specified region.
The following is an example CLI command. Replace {RegionId} with a valid region ID from the tables above.
aliyun ecs DescribeZones --region {RegionId}Query instance type availability
Available instance types may vary by region. To view the availability of a specific instance type in each region, see Instance types available for purchase in each region.
Regions and endpoints
An endpoint is a service domain name provided by Elastic Compute Service. Elastic Compute Service supports both public endpoints and VPC endpoints. To use ECS with an SDK, CLI, or API, you must configure the appropriate endpoint. For information about ECS endpoints, see the following topics:
To manage resources such as instances, images, and block storage, see Endpoints of the ECS API.
To use EBS, see Endpoints of the EBS API.
