Data Management (DMS) supports three control modes that determine what governance features apply to a database instance: Flexible Management, Stable Change, and Security Collaboration. Change the control mode when your requirements change — for example, to enable structured approval workflows or security audit features.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure that:
Your system role in DMS is database administrator (DBA) or DMS administrator — only these roles can see the Control Mode option. If the option is not visible, check your role assignment.
You have purchased the target control mode. Flexible Management is free. Stable Change and Security Collaboration are paid tiers — purchase them before switching. For details, see Pricing.
Control modes at a glance
| Control mode | Cost | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible Management | Free | Direct database access without governance overhead |
| Stable Change | Paid | Structured change workflows with audit trails |
| Security Collaboration | Paid | Full security controls, approval workflows, and compliance enforcement |
For a complete feature comparison, see Control modes.
Changing the control mode does not affect existing database connections.
Change the control mode of a single instance
Log on to the DMS console V5.0.
In the left-side instance list on the DMS homepage, right-click the target instance.
Move the pointer over Control Mode and select the mode you want.
In the Change Control Mode message, click OK.
If you select Security Collaboration, you must also select a security rule. If you have not purchased Stable Change or Security Collaboration, the system displays a quota message after you click OK. Purchase the required control mode and try again.
Change the control mode of multiple instances
Log on to the DMS console V5.0.
Navigate to the Instances page:
Menu mode: Move the pointer over the icon in the upper-left corner and choose All functions > Data Assets > Instances.
Normal mode: Choose Data Assets > Instances in the top navigation bar.
Select the instances whose control mode you want to change.
Click Batch edit.
In the Edit instance information in batches dialog, select Functional Package and choose a control mode.
If you do not select Stable Change or Security Collaboration, the instances default to Flexible Management. If you select Security Collaboration, you must also select a security rule.
Click OK.
If you have not purchased Stable Change or Security Collaboration, the system displays a quota message after you click OK. Purchase the required control mode and try again.
FAQ
Why are other mode options not displayed when I change the control mode of an instance?
Check whether your system role in DMS is an administrator or a DBA. If you do not have the required role, ask your DMS administrator to update your role assignment.
