Dataphin:Create and manage source systems

Last Updated:Jan 21, 2025

You can configure the source system associated with metadata collected from a specified data source. This enables efficient metadata classification management, asset object filtering, and data lineage visualization. This topic describes the process for creating and managing source systems.

Permission description

Super administrators, system administrators, and custom global roles with Source System-Management permissions are authorized to create and manage source systems.

Usage instructions

A single tenant is limited to creating no more than 200 source systems.

Create a new source system

  1. Navigate to Administration > Metadata from the top menu bar on the Dataphin home page.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, click General Configuration > Source System. On the Source System page, select the Create New Source System button.

  3. Fill in the required parameters in the Create New Source System dialog box.

    Parameter

    Description

    Source System Name

The name of the source system, globally unique, not exceeding 256 characters.

    Description

You can add descriptions of the source system's scenarios, background information, and so on, not exceeding 2000 characters.

    System Type

Select the type of source system to facilitate classification of different assets. You can quickly detect the type of asset in the metadata checklist and data lineage. Supports selection of operational system, data collection layer, data manipulation layer, application data service, data service (API), and report application.

    • Operational System: The source data layer is where various business systems (such as ERP systems, CRM systems, production systems, and so on) within the organization generate and store data.

    • Data Collection Layer: Responsible for extracting data from multiple business systems or external data sources and performing preliminary processing, such as traffic scrubbing and format transformation.

    • Data Manipulation Layer: Accepts the preliminarily processed data for further traffic scrubbing, integration, and transformation to generate subject data available for analysis.

    • Application Data Service: Contains integrated subject data, providing integrated data for analysis and reporting, usually presented in the form of a multidimensional model to support various analysis and reporting needs.

    • Data Service (API): Provides data to different applications and services through APIs and other means, supporting internal and external data access needs of the enterprise.

    • Report Application: Business reports, dashboards, and other advanced analysis visualization displays generated based on the data provided by the application data service.

    Owner

Select the operator of the source system, responsible for routine maintenance of the metadata belonging to this source system. Supports selection of users or user groups.

    • User: Select users who are in normal use under the current tenant, up to 200 users.

    • User Group: Select user groups that are enabled and in normal status. Members automatically update with changes in user group members, up to 50 user groups.

    Contact

Fill in the contact person for the source system, not exceeding 256 characters.

  4. Click OK to finalize the creation of the new source system.

Manage the source system list

  1. The Source System page displays the name, system type, description, operator, contact person, and latest update time of each source system.

  2. (Optional) Search for a specific source system using the name keyword or quickly filter the list by selecting Related To Me.

  3. To manage a source system, perform the desired actions in the operation column.

    Operation

    Description

    View

You can click the name of the source system or the View icon under the operation column to view the configured source system information. You can also click the Edit button to modify the source system information.

    Edit

Supports modification of the configuration information of the source system.

    Delete

After the source system is deleted, the association between the source system and the data source will be automatically deleted. If a collection task has configured the current source system as the affiliated system, you need to modify the configuration association of the collection task before deleting.
