Cloud Backup:Restore a disk

Last Updated:Nov 18, 2025

If a system failure or faulty operation occurs on a disk attached to an Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance, you can restore the original disk or clone a disk using a backup point in the source region or a backup point replicated to the destination region.

Prerequisites

An ECS instance is backed up. For more information, see Back up ECS instances.

Background information

Disk restoration protects all disks that are attached to ECS instances, including the disks that are subsequently attached. This feature can also protect specified disks. To efficiently restore a disk, you can use a backup.

Restore the original disk

If a system failure or faulty operation occurs on an ECS disk attached to an ECS instance, you can restore the disk using a backup point.

  1. Log on to the Cloud Backup console.

  2. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Backup > ECS Instance Backup.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. Click the Backed-up ECS Instances tab.

  5. You can click the image icon next to the destination ECS instance.

  6. On the Disk Protection tab, click an available backup point and click Restore.

    Important

You can roll back a disk only when the ECS instance is stopped and no backup is being created for the disk. After an ECS disk is rolled back to a specified point in time, the data that is written to the disk after the point in time is cleared. Proceed with caution.

  7. In the dialog box that appears, you can click Ok.

After you create the restore job, you can view the progress on the Jobs tab.

Clone a disk

If a system failure or faulty operation occurs on a disk attached to an ECS instance, you can clone a disk using a backup point.

  6. On the Disk Protection tab, click an available backup point and click Clone.

  7. In the Create Disk from Backup panel, you can select the ECS instance to which you want to attach the new disk and then click Next.

  8. On the Set Mount Parameters tab, you can select the destination disk type and performance level, and then click Create.

After you create the restore job, you can view the progress on the Jobs tab.
