:Create a disk backup

Last Updated:May 09, 2026

Cloud Backup integrates with the Alibaba Cloud snapshot service to provide an agentless backup method for ECS instances and cloud disks. You can create crash-consistent backups for all types of cloud disks, including system disks and data disks, and use them to restore an entire cloud disk.

Background information

  • Disk backup is a backup orchestration service provided by Cloud Backup that is built on the snapshot capabilities of ECS. Before you use disk backup, ensure that the snapshot service is activated. You can click Check snapshot activation status.

  • The snapshot service incurs charges. For more information, see Snapshot billing.

  • Charges for the snapshot service include the snapshot capacity used by this feature, the capacity in the destination region, and any cross-region traffic generated by backup replication. For more information, see Snapshot billing.

Usage notes

Disk backup does not support backing up or restoring local disks. For more information about local disks, see Local disks.

Storing data on local disks poses a risk of data loss. We recommend that you use ECS file backup to protect files on your local disks, or use database backup to protect databases deployed on your local disks. For more information, see Back up ECS files and Database backup.

Procedure

Important

When you add an ECS instance and its cloud disks, make sure the cloud disks are in the In Use or Unattached state. If a cloud disk is in the In Use state, the attached ECS instance must be in the Running or Stopped state.

  1. Log on to the Cloud Backup console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Backup > Disk Backup.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. Click Disk Backup Wizard.

  5. In the Disk Backup Wizard panel, select the cloud disks that you want to protect and click Next.

  6. On the Configure Backup Policy tab, select Manual Backup or Auto Backup as the backup method.

    • Manual Backup

      Enter a Backup Name.

The name must be 2 to 128 characters in length. It cannot start with auto, a special character, or a digit. It can contain only periods (.), underscores (_), hyphens (-), and colons (:).

    • Auto Backup

      Important

If the selected region supports backup policies, associate a backup policy. Cloud Backup will then periodically back up the ECS cloud disks based on the policy.

In the left-side navigation pane, click Policy Center to view the regions that support backup policies. To create a backup policy, see Create a backup policy.

If the selected region does not support backup policies, configure a backup plan based on the parameters on the page.

      Parameter

      Description

      Backup Policy

Select an appropriate backup policy from the drop-down list.

Cloud Backup automatically backs up data sources based on the backup policy that you configure. A backup policy defines settings such as the vault encryption method, backup interval, retention period, cross-region replication policy, and automatic archiving to help you flexibly manage your data source assets.

If the default backup policies do not meet your requirements, click Create Backup Policy or Edit Policy to create or modify a backup policy.

For details on the parameters in a backup policy, see Policy Center.

  7. Click OK.

After the disk backup is created, you can view the backup progress on the Protected Disk tab.
