Backup and Disaster Recovery Center:FAQ

Last Updated:Jun 22, 2026

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Backup and Disaster Recovery Center (BDRC), covering billing, resource visibility, geo-redundancy, and data privacy.

  • Is BDRC an upgraded version of Cloud Backup? What is the relationship between BDRC and Cloud Backup?

BDRC is a new public cloud service independent of Cloud Backup. It aggregates the usage status of Alibaba Cloud storage protection services, including Cloud Backup, but does not provide data backup or recovery capabilities itself. As a centralized disaster recovery management platform, BDRC helps you observe and improve data protection status, seamlessly connects to various data protection services, and simplifies disaster recovery to ensure business continuity and regulatory compliance.

  • Am I charged for using BDRC?

BDRC itself is free of charge. However, the underlying disaster recovery services, such as disk snapshots and Cloud Backup, that you use to increase data protection scores or fix disaster recovery risks are billed separately. For more information, see Billing.

  • How do I determine whether my enterprise needs to use BDRC?

BDRC is designed for customers who use Alibaba Cloud storage solutions, including Elastic Compute Service (ECS), Object Storage Service (OSS), File Storage NAS (NAS), and Tablestore, and who have high requirements for business continuity, compliance, and data protection. BDRC helps you and your IT engineers understand and improve the data protection status of your Alibaba Cloud storage resources more efficiently.

  • I have added 10 ECS instances to my account. Why are these instances not displayed in Resource Center in the BDRC console?

BDRC runs an automatic inspection at 00:00 every day to check and update resource information in your account. To trigger an immediate update, go to the BDRC console and click Check All Resource on the Overview tab.

  • When do I need to enable geo-redundancy?

Enable geo-redundancy if your enterprise or industry is subject to geo-redundancy requirements. For example, the Information System Resilience Capability Standard for Securities and Futures Operating Institutions requires daily backups of account opening, transaction, and market performance data, with one copy stored locally and another in a remote region. Even without mandatory requirements, we recommend enabling geo-redundancy if your budget allows. This prevents irreversible business and data losses caused by regional natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes.

  • Does BDRC read my resource data, such as the files in my NAS file system?

No. BDRC is a disaster recovery management service that only queries the status of your data protection solutions, such as the NAS recycle bin, by calling the related API operations. It does not read any of your resource data.
