ApsaraMQ for RocketMQ:Change the edition of an instance

Last Updated:Mar 10, 2026

As your message volume grows or your SLA requirements change, you can switch an ApsaraMQ for RocketMQ instance between Standard Edition and Enterprise Platinum Edition without creating a new instance.

EditionBilling methodBest for
Standard EditionPay-as-you-goSmall or fluctuating message volumes
Enterprise Platinum EditionSubscriptionHigh SLA requirements or large, stable message volumes

Enterprise Platinum Edition provides additional capabilities beyond Standard Edition. For a full comparison, see Instance editions.

Upgrade from Standard Edition to Enterprise Platinum Edition

Upgrading converts your instance from pay-as-you-go billing to subscription billing and migrates topics from a shared cluster to a dedicated cluster. The upgrade runs in place -- you do not need to create a new instance.

What to expect

ItemImpact
Instance ID and endpointUnchanged
Service availabilityThe instance stays online. Messages can be sent and received during the upgrade.
Topic migrationTopics migrate from a shared cluster to a dedicated cluster. This triggers consumer client load balancing between the two clusters.
ReversibilityNot immediately reversible. To revert to Standard Edition, set Post-expiration Action and wait for the subscription to expire. See Downgrade from Enterprise Platinum Edition to Standard Edition.
Important

After the upgrade completes, submit a ticket to obtain expert services.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the ApsaraMQ for RocketMQ console. In the left-side navigation pane, click Instances. In the top navigation bar, select the region of your instance.

  2. On the Instances page, click the name of the target instance. In the upper-right corner of the Instance Details page, click Upgrade to Enterprise Platinum Edition.

Downgrade from Enterprise Platinum Edition to Standard Edition

You cannot directly downgrade an Enterprise Platinum Edition instance. Instead, configure the instance to automatically revert to Standard Edition when the subscription expires or when you unsubscribe.

Warning

By default, Post-release Action is set to Delete Resource. If you do not change Post-expiration Action to Downgrade to Standard Edition before the subscription ends, the instance and all its topics and groups are permanently deleted. This action cannot be undone.

Workflow overview

  1. Set Post-expiration Action to Downgrade to Standard Edition.

  2. Unsubscribe from the instance or wait for the subscription to expire.

  3. The instance automatically converts to Standard Edition with pay-as-you-go billing.

Important

Follow these steps in order. Skipping or reordering steps may cause the instance and all its topics and groups to be permanently deleted.

Step 1: Set the post-expiration action

  1. Log on to the ApsaraMQ for RocketMQ console. In the left-side navigation pane, click Instances. In the top navigation bar, select the region of your instance.

  2. On the Instances page, click the name of the target instance.

  3. In the upper-right corner of the Instance Details page, click Edit next to Post-expiration Action. In the panel that appears, set Post-expiration Action to Downgrade to Standard Edition.

Note

The Post-release Action parameter can only be changed after the instance is created.

Step 2: Unsubscribe or wait for expiration

Choose one of the following options:

  • Wait for the subscription to expire. The instance automatically converts to Standard Edition after expiration.

  • Unsubscribe immediately. Go to the Unsubscribe page in the Fees and Costs console. Set the Type parameter to Partial Refund, find the ApsaraMQ for RocketMQ instance, and click Unsubscribe Resource in the Actions column. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the refund.

After the instance is unsubscribed or expires, it immediately converts to Standard Edition with pay-as-you-go billing. For billing details, see Billing overview.

Note

An Enterprise Platinum Edition instance is released seven days after it expires by default. Even if Post-expiration Action is set to Downgrade to Standard Edition, you may still receive a release notification. Ignore this notification -- the instance will be downgraded, not deleted.
