Alibaba Cloud no longer provides new patches for ApsaraDB RDS instances that run SQL Server 2008 R2 from July 9, 2019.
Declaration
- If you continue to use RDS instances that run SQL Server 2008 R2, security risks may arise in your applications and workloads. The security risks include but are not limited to security issues, application incompatibility issues, compliance issues, and possible security threats caused by some non-functional risks.
- Alibaba Cloud is not responsible for the issues that occur in the kernel of SQL Server 2008 R2 because these issues are not caused by Alibaba Cloud services. The issues include failures, security risks, incompatibility issues, and possible high-impact risks. You are responsible for the risks and consequences if any.

July 9, 2019
Cause
Microsoft ends the support for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 from July 9, 2019. This means that Microsoft no longer provides patches or security updates. However, Extended Security Updates is still available. Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for up to three years from July 9, 2019, which includes Security Updates and Bulletins rated "critical."
Existing RDS instances that run SQL Server 2008 R2
We recommend that you upgrade existing ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server instances from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2016. For more information, see 2008 Upgrade an ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server instance with local SSDs from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2016.
New RDS instances that run SQL Server 2008 R2
Microsoft offers up to three years of Extended Security Updates for purchase. We recommend that you purchase RDS instances that run other SQL Server versions. If you still choose to purchase or use RDS instances that run SQL Server 2008 R2, you must know that Alibaba Cloud does not provide new patches for your RDS instances that run SQL Server 2008 R2.
