Elastic Desktop Service:Upgrade Windows Server 2016

Last Updated:Jul 08, 2025

This topic describes how to upgrade Windows Server 2016 to mitigate the risks caused by the end-of-life (EOL) of the Windows Server operating system (OS) on cloud computers, while restoring Alibaba Cloud Workspace support for some cloud computer features to ensure business continuity.

Background information

Microsoft has discontinued mainstream support for Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019, meaning free incident support and security updates are no longer provided. While EDS Enterprise still supports creating cloud computers with these OS versions and offers compatibility assistance, it is important to note that using unsupported or soon-to-be unsupported OS versions poses risks and requires careful consideration.

Impacts of Windows Server's Extended Support ending:

  • Once Extended Support ends, users will no longer receive software maintenance or support from Microsoft, including bug fixes and feature updates.

  • Cloud computers created in the EDS Enterprise console will continue to function after the Extended Support period ends, but some features, such as dual-screen, may be limited. For better security and stability of your cloud computer, please upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible.
