You can establish PrivateLink connections to access services on Alibaba Cloud. Network traffic does not traverse the Internet when PrivateLink is used. This avoids security risks over the Internet.

Regions and zones

A region is a geographic area where a data center resides. After an Alibaba Cloud resource is created, the region of the resource cannot be changed. A zone is a physical location with independent power supplies and networks within a region. The network latency of connections between instances within the same zone is lower.

Zones within the same region can access each other through private connections. When a zone is down, the other zones are not affected. We recommend that you choose a deployment method that meets your business requirements in disaster recovery and network latency.
  • If your application requires high disaster recovery capabilities, we recommend that you create instances in different zones of the same region.
  • If your application requires low network latency, we recommend that you create instances within the same zone.
