About DOKU

DOKU is one of Indonesia’s leading payment technology companies and a pioneer in enabling digital transactions in the country. It helps more than 150,000 merchants to accept payments and serves more than 3 million users. It holds multiple licenses from Bank Indonesia, the central bank of Indonesia. Besides, it offers DOKU e-wallet service to simplify digital transactions for its users and enables easy payments within the DOKU ecosystem. The company aims to be at the forefront of the country’s cashless economy and play a key role in enabling seamless transactions in the Indonesian economy.

The Challenge

DOKU is under the purview of the central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) and needs to comply with mandatory financial regulations. One of the requirements is to maintain a reliable disaster recovery plan. The company needed a reliable and highly reputed cloud partner who could also provide various services to help the company overcome its IT infrastructure challenges. The Bank Indonesia regulations also require that the disaster recovery site should be within Indonesia. Hence, the company needed access to world-class data centers in the country certified with local and international standards. In addition, the company required a cloud provider with substantial knowledge and technical know-how in solving the problems of Indonesian fintech businesses. DOKU also wanted to move from its on-premises IT infrastructure model to cloud infrastructure that would help the company shift from a CAPEX to OPEX model and gain significant cost optimization benefits. With this transition, the company envisions maintaining a stable and robust production environment while being compliant with regulations and controlling infrastructure costs efficiently.

Why Alibaba Cloud

Alibaba Cloud has a strong presence in Indonesia with two word-class local data centers, with a third local data center planned to be available soon. Therefore, DOKU could rely on Alibaba Cloud for its production as well as disaster recovery requirements. Also, Alibaba Cloud has helped numerous local businesses across industry verticals, including fintech companies. It also provides high availability of 99.95% uptime guarantee backed with service-level agreements (SLA). Moreover, Alibaba Cloud offers flexible scaling capabilities to dynamically provision and de-provision cloud resources based on workload demands. Alibaba Cloud also provides numerous innovative solutions that help to reduce the time and personnel required to manage IT infrastructure. All of this helped DOKU choose Alibaba Cloud as its preferred cloud partner.

Architecture

DOKU has implemented a hybrid cloud architecture by connecting its on-premises infrastructure with Alibaba Cloud. It leveraged Alibaba Cloud’s Express Connect service to establish secure and reliable private connections between its on-premises and cloud environments and achieve high network throughput and low latency. In a phased manner, DOKU uses Alibaba Cloud Container Service for Kubernetes (ACK) to adopt microservices architecture for its primary services and business applications. It helps the company benefit from the managed Kubernetes services by eliminating the need to maintain the underlying infrastructure. DOKU also employed AlibabaMQ for Apache Kafka to interconnect multiple applications in the hybrid environment and facilitate secure and controlled communication among various business applications. Being a PaaS service, AlibabaMQ for Apache Kafka helped the company minimize the need to maintain the underlying infrastructure of the message queues. For database management, the company adopted ApsaraDB RDS for Redis, MongoDB, and PolarDB. It helped them benefit from increased stability and the built-in high-availability option. This freed the company’s personnel from many typical database management activities and helped implement a robust disaster recovery strategy.
