Cloud Database refers to a database that is optimized or deployed in a virtual computing environment.

Cloud Database Definition

Cloud Database refers to a database that is optimized or deployed in a virtual computing environment. It can realize the advantages of paying on-demand, scaling on-demand, high availability, and storage integration. According to the database type, it is generally divided into relational databases and non-relational database (NoSQL database). The features of cloud databases include fast instance creation, support for read-only instances, read-write separation, automatic failover, data backup, Binlog backup, SQL audit, access whitelist, monitoring, and message notification, etc.

Optimizing an existing database to a cloud database has the following benefits:

  • Users can pay according to storage capacity and bandwidth requirements;
  • The database can be moved from one place to another (cloud portability);
  • Can realize on-demand expansion;
  • High Availability (HA);

Deploying databases to the cloud can support and ensure business applications in the cloud as part of the deployment of software as a service (SaaS) by simplifying the business process of connecting available information through the Web network. In addition, deploying enterprise databases to the cloud can also achieve storage integration. For example, a large company with multiple departments must also have multiple databases, which can be integrated into a database management system (DBMS) in a cloud environment.

  • Easy to deploy: Users can easily complete the database application and creation in the RDS console, and the RDS instance can be ready and put into use within a few minutes. The user manages all instances uniformly through the fully functional console provided by RDS;
  • High Reliability: The cloud database has functions such as automatic single point switchover of failures and automatic database backup to ensure high availability of instances and data security. Provide 7-day data backup for free, which can be restored or rolled back to any backup point within 7 days;
  • Low Cost: The cost paid by RDS is much lower than the cost of a self-built database. Users can choose different packages according to their own needs and get a complete set of professional database support services at a very low price;

Cloud database features

  • Fast instance creation: After selecting the required package, the RDS console will optimize the configuration parameters according to the selected package, and a usable database instance will be created in just a few minutes.
  • Support for read-only instances: RDS read-only instances are oriented to read and write scenarios that have a large number of reading requests to the database instead of a large number of write requests. By creating multiple RDS read-only instances for the standard instance, the standard instance is given flexible read capacity expansion, thereby increasing users Throughput.
  • Automatic failover: When an unpredictable failure (such as hardware failure) occurs in the main library, RDS will automatically switch the main library instance under this instance, and the recovery time is generally <5min.
  • Data backup: RDS automatically turns on backup by default to realize regular backup of database instances. The automatic backup retention period is seven days.
    On the basis of automatic scheduled backup, RDS also supports manual database instance backup (ie data snapshot) by users, and the database instance can be restored from the data snapshot at any time.
  • Binlog backup: RDS will automatically back up the Binlog log and keep the backup of the Binlog log for a long time.
    Binlog logs backed up by RDS are also available for users to download, which is convenient for users to analyze and process Binlog again.
  • Access whitelist: RDS supports controlling the access rights of RDS instances by setting the IP whitelist.
  • Monitoring and message notification: Through the RDS console, you can learn more about the running status of the database. And you can customize the required monitoring strategy through the console. When the monitored item reaches the monitoring strategy threshold, RDS will remind and notify through SMS.
    Relevant changes to the RDS service will also be notified in time through the email or SMS notification function.
