:Step 1: Scale out the capacity of a disk

Last Updated:Dec 03, 2025

If a system disk or data disk has insufficient space, you can scale out its capacity in the RDS Custom console. This topic describes how to perform an online scale-out, which does not require an instance restart, and an offline scale-out, which requires an instance restart.

Limits

You cannot scale out a disk if a snapshot is being created for it. Wait for the snapshot creation to complete before you scale out the disk.

Prerequisites

  • Make sure that the instance meets the following requirements:

    • For an online scale-out, the instance must be in the Running state.

    • For an offline scale-out, the instance can be in the Running or Stopped state.

  • Make sure that the disk meets the following requirements:

    • The disk must be in the In Use or Unattached state.

    • (Recommended) Create a snapshot for the disk to back up your data. For more information, see Create a snapshot.

Procedure

This topic uses scaling out a disk on the Custom Storage And Snapshot page as an example.

Note

You can also scale out a disk on the Storage Information page of the target instance. On the Instances page, click the ID of the target instance. Then, in the navigation pane on the left, click Storage Information and click Expand in the Actions column.

  1. Log on to the RDS console. In the navigation pane on the left, click Storage And Snapshot.

  2. On the Custom Disks tab, find the target disk and click Expand in the Actions column.

  3. On the Change Storage Type page, select a Storage Expansion Method and set the Storage Space.

    • Online Expansion: After the scale-out is complete, you do not need to restart the instance. The new capacity takes effect immediately.

      Note

An offline scale-out requires an instance restart to take effect. If your services cannot be interrupted by an instance restart, select online scale-out.

    • Offline Expansion: After the scale-out is complete, you must restart the instance for the new capacity to take effect. Running the reboot command from within the instance is not sufficient. For more information, see Restart an instance.

      Note

If your instance is in the stopped state, or if you are using an older instance type that does not support online scale-out, you can only perform an offline scale-out.

  4. Read and select the Terms Of Service, and then click Change Now.
