Cloud Backup:Restore a VMware VM

Last Updated:Jan 05, 2026

This topic describes how to restore a VMware virtual machine (VM) to an on-premises server or the vCenter Server of Alibaba Cloud VMware Service (ACVS) in the Cloud Backup console.

Prerequisites

A VMware VM has been backed up. For more information, see Back up VMware VMs.

Background information

  • If a backed-up VMware VM fails, restore it from the Cloud Backup console to a local server or to Alibaba Cloud VMware Service to ensure business continuity.

  • Starting with version 1.0.13, the VM backup service supports centralized management of backup and restore jobs in the Cloud Backup console. If you have existing backup plans that are managed offline, migrate them to the Cloud Backup console.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the Cloud Backup console.

  2. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Backup > VMware Backup & Disaster Recovery.

  3. In the upper-left corner of the page, select a region.

  4. On the Backup Jobs tab, find the backup job that you want to restore. Click Restore to VMware in the Actions column.

    Note
    • You can restore the VM data to a local VMware environment or to Alibaba Cloud VMware Service.

    • During the restore process, a new VM is created. The name of the new VM uses the format random_prefix-original_vm_name. This operation does not affect the original VM.

  5. In the Create Restore Job panel, complete the following steps: VM, Select Destination, Select Compute Node, Select Storage, Select Network, and Confirm.

  6. Click Create.

On the Restore Jobs tab, view information such as the restore progress of VMware VMs and the restored data volume.
