Express Connect:Use cases

Last Updated:Nov 10, 2025

Express Connect stablishes reliable, secure, and high-speed private connections between on-premises data center and a virtual private cloud (VPC). Use Express Connect to enable communication between networks with different architectures. The following section describes the use cases of Express Connect.

Use case 1: Disaster recovery and high-availability architecture for medium and large businesses

When mission-critical workloads in your on-premises data center require extremely high availability, establish dedicated Express Connect circuits at multiple access points. This network topology provides resilience against connection failures caused by fiber optic cable cuts, equipment malfunctions, or failures at an access point.

You can implement this architecture with dedicated or shared or circuit.

Use case 2: High-elasticity and high-availability network architecture for large businesses

When fast business growth outpaces the capacity of your existing data center, deploy services on the cloud to meet the increased demand. Use Equal-Cost Multi-Path (ECMP) to elastically scale your dedicated connection bandwidth. This lets your business handle traffic at a terabit-per-second (Tbps) scale. This prevents service downtime caused by malfunctions of devices, leased lines, and access points.

Use case 3: Simplified network architecture for non-critical services

For non-critical workloads that do not require high elasticity or high availability, such as development and testing environments, use Express Connect to establish private connection between your on-premises data center and your cloud network. This simple topology ensures secure and reliable communication between your on-premises and cloud environments.

You can create dedicated connections or hosted connections in this scenario.
