Edge Security Acceleration:What is an ASN?

Last Updated:Apr 15, 2025

Each autonomous system (AS) is assigned a unique autonomous system number (ASN). ASNs are managed globally by the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) through the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

What is an AS?

An AS is a group of networks or subnets that trust each other and use the same routing policy to communicate via the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). In Edge Security Acceleration (ESA) rules, ASNs are unique numbers used to identify and distinguish different network providers or geographical regions. By referencing ASNs, ESA helps you intelligently manage network sources, boosting performance, security, and user experience.

What is an ASN?

An ASN is a 32-bit integer that uniquely identifies an autonomous system and is used to identify different networks or network providers in BGP. In ESA rules, each ASN is used as an identifier for matching and managing traffic for a particular network or geographic region.

There are five RIRs in the world. RIRs manage ASNs within their respective regions.

  • African Network Coordination Centre (AFRINIC)

  • American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN)

  • Asia-Pacific Network Coordination Centre (APNIC)

  • Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC)

  • Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC)
