This topic describes how to resolve the "Remote Desktop licensing server is not specified" error when connecting to an ECS instance that runs Windows Server 2008 R2.
Symptoms
When you connect to an ECS instance that runs Windows Server 2008 R2 using Remote Desktop, you receive the "Remote Desktop licensing server is not specified" error.
Cause
The Remote Desktop Services role is installed by default on Windows Server 2008 R2. This role includes a 120-day licensing grace period. After the grace period expires, you must purchase the required licenses from Microsoft to continue using the service.
Solutions
Choose a solution based on your requirements.

Solution 1: Uninstall the Remote Desktop Session Host

Connect to the Windows instance using VNC.
For more information, see Log on to a Windows instance by using a password or key.

Right-click My Computer and select Manage to open Server Manager.

In Server Manager, click Roles, and then click Remove Roles in the right pane.

In the window that appears, select Remote Desktop Services to remove this paid role.

Reconnect to the instance using Remote Desktop to verify that the issue is resolved.
