:Network interface controller of a Windows instance is not available

Problem description

The network interface controller a Windows instance is unavailable, leading to a failure in remote access.

Solution

Alibaba Cloud reminds you that:

  • Before you perform operations that may cause risks, such as modifying instance configurations or data, we recommend that you check the disaster recovery and fault tolerance capabilities of the instances to ensure data security.
  • You can modify the configurations and data of instances including but not limited to Elastic Compute Service (ECS) and Relational Database Service (RDS) instances. Before the modification, we recommend that you create snapshots or enable RDS log backup.
  • If you have authorized or submitted sensitive information such as the logon account and password in the Alibaba Cloud Management Console, we recommend that you modify such information in a timely manner.

The content of this article has been verified in the Windows Server 2012 version of the system, and may be slightly different in other versions. For more information, see the official documentation for the version.

  1. Log on to a Windows instance through VNC. For more information, see connection method overview.
  2. In the lower-right corner of the task bar, right-click the network icon and select Open Network and Sharing Center.
  3. Click Change adapter settings view the network interface controller is disabled, if disabled, right-click the network interface controller name, select enable can.
  4. If the network interface controller is still unavailable, open the running window, enter regedit, and click OK to open the registry editor.
  5. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>Control>Then, check whether the name is Installer32, the type is REG_SZ, and the data is NetCfgx.dll. The NetClassInstaller information. If it does not exist, add it.
    Note: Changing Registry Editor information requires restart to make it take effect.
  6. Then, open the run window, enter devmgmt.msc, and click OK to open the Device Manager.
  7. Double-click the network adapter, right-click network interface controller device name, select update driver software, and then select automatically search for updated driver software to update network interface controller driver.
  8. Make sure that the remote connection to the Windows instance is working properly again.
