    Migrate your Microsoft licenses to Alibaba Cloud ECS through License Mobility. Skip this topic if you use a dedicated host or an Alibaba Cloud-provided license.

    Background

    Alibaba Cloud is an Authorized Mobility Partner of Microsoft. You can migrate licenses covered by active Software Assurance contracts to Alibaba Cloud as Bring Your Own License (BYOL) licenses.

    To use License Mobility, ensure the following requirements are met:

    • Your licenses have active Microsoft Software Assurance.

    • The Microsoft services must support License Mobility. Eligible services include:

      • Exchange Server

      • SharePoint Server

      • SQL Server Standard Edition

      • SQL Server Enterprise Edition

      • Skype for Business Server

      • System Center Server

      • Project Server

      • Visual Studio Team Foundation Server

      • BizTalk Server

      • Remote Desktop Services

    • Eligible Volume Licensing programs include Enterprise Agreement, Enterprise Subscription Agreement, and Microsoft Open Value Agreement (Software Assurance included), as well as programs where Software Assurance is optional, such as Microsoft Open License or Select Plus.

    • License Mobility does not apply to client operating systems (such as Windows 10) or desktop applications (such as Microsoft Office).

    Procedure

    Per Microsoft License Mobility terms, you can deploy application environments before Microsoft confirms your application. Within 10 days of deployment, complete and submit the License Mobility Verification Form. The following figure shows the application workflow. Review workflow of License Mobility application

    1. Deploy a License Mobility-eligible application in Alibaba Cloud.

    2. Submit the license migration application to Microsoft.

      See License Mobility through Software Assurance for detailed steps. On the verification form, specify Alibaba Cloud as the Authorized Mobility Partner:

    3. Wait for Microsoft to review and reply.

    Next steps

    Under the Microsoft Product Terms, you can reallocate licenses with License Mobility benefits:

    • Reallocate licenses to other ECS instances in the same Alibaba Cloud zone.

    • Reallocate licenses to ECS instances in different Alibaba Cloud zones. Consecutive reallocations must be at least 90 days apart.
