:Secondary DNS

Last Updated:May 19, 2025

Overview

The Secondary DNS feature is a DNS data backup and disaster recovery service provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS for self-managed DNS servers and the DNS servers that are hosted by third-party DNS service providers. If the Secondary DNS feature is enabled for a domain name, the original DNS server for the domain name serves as the primary DNS, and Alibaba Cloud DNS server is used as the Secondary DNS by default. Based on the RFC standard protocol, a cross-region data transmission mechanism is provided between the primary and secondary DNS servers. When the primary DNS server fails or is interrupted, the secondary DNS server can be used to provide DNS services. This helps ensure the stability and reliability of your business around the world.

Benefits

  • Data backup and disaster recovery service helps prevent service interruption

If the primary DNS server fails, the secondary DNS server is used to provide domain name resolution services. This helps ensure business continuity and availability.

  • High stability and reliability help ensure safe and smooth operation of your business

Alibaba Cloud DNS servers around the world back up each other to deliver Service Level Agreement (SLA)-guaranteed availability of 100%.

  • Global nodes help improve domain name resolution efficiency

Globally-distributed nodes and continuously expanding data centers improve user experience of accessing Alibaba Cloud DNS across regions.

  • Server Load Balancer (SLB) helps distribute network traffic and balance workloads

To achieve load balancing, the Secondary DNS feature allows you to use the secondary DNS server and primary DNS server to provide DNS services at the same time.

  • High security backed by real-time attack detection and more than 10 Tbit/s bandwidth around the world

With the Secondary DNS feature, you can choose to hide the primary DNS server and specify that the secondary DNS server, which indicates Alibaba Cloud DNS, is used for domain name resolution. This helps guarantee the security of the primary DNS server.
