:Check a domain name

Last Updated:Aug 22, 2025

If you need information about your domain name, such as its registrar, expiration date, status, DNS resolution, or ICP filing, use the tool in this topic to perform a diagnosis.

Why check a domain name

Many customers experience DNS resolution configuration failures for the following reasons:

  • The domain name was purchased from another provider, so Alibaba Cloud DNS cannot find the domain name to perform public authoritative DNS resolution.

  • The domain name was purchased from Alibaba Cloud, but the configured DNS servers belong to another provider, so the configuration does not take effect.

  • The domain name status is abnormal. It may be locked due to issues such as failed real-name verification, expiration, or regulatory problems.

  • The domain name has not completed its ICP filing.

Check your domain name to confirm that you have the required permissions, the domain status is normal, and it meets policy requirements. This helps ensure a smooth DNS configuration and prevents resolution or access issues.

Use the domain name diagnosis tool

  1. Open Network Diagnosis and Analysis.

  2. Enter the domain name you want to check, such as aliyun.com, and click Check Now.

  3. The page displays information for Domain Check, DNS Check, Network Check, and Local System Info.

Details

Domain check

The domain check verifies that the domain name's expiration date and status are normal.

Field

Field value (example)

Field description

Domain name registrar

Alibaba Cloud Computing (Beijing) Co., Ltd.

Where the domain name is registered.

  • Alibaba Cloud: Alibaba Cloud Computing

  • Tencent Cloud: DNSPod, Inc.

  • MarkMonitor: MarkMonitor Inc.

Validity period

The domain name is within its validity period

Check if the domain name has expired.

  • If your domain name has expired, promptly renew it with your domain name registrar. For domain names purchased from Alibaba Cloud, see Domain Name Renewal. After a domain name expires, it typically takes 24 to 48 hours to restore service after a successful renewal. Acceleration is not available during this restoration period.

Domain status

The domain status is Normal.

Check that the domain name is working correctly.

  • If your domain name registrar is not Alibaba Cloud, contact your domain name registrar for assistance.

FAQ

1. I have renewed my domain name. Why does the Network Diagnosis and Analysis tool still show that it has expired?

A: The Network Diagnosis and Analysis module uses the whois command to perform queries. Information from the whois system is not updated in real-time. If you encounter this issue, go to the whois system and click Query Now.

DNS check

The DNS Check examines the domain's DNS resolution status. This includes public authoritative resolution, public recursive resolution, and the time it takes for changes to take effect. For more information, see DNS server levels and the DNS resolution procedure.

Field

Field value (example)

Field description

DNS service provider

ns3.aliyun.com,ns4.aliyun.com,ns5.aliyun.com (Alibaba Cloud DNS service)

The provider of the authoritative DNS service for your domain name.

  • If the DNS service provider shows Not using Alibaba Cloud DNS, contact your DNS service provider to troubleshoot and resolve the issue. Alibaba Cloud DNS does not support troubleshooting the DNS status of other providers.

DNS provider resolution result

A

192.168.0.1

MX

mx2.mail.aliyun.com

The authoritative DNS records for the domain name.

  • The message No DNS records detected for the domain name means that you have not added any DNS records to the authoritative DNS server.

  • The message DNS resolution check failed indicates that an error occurred when querying the authoritative DNS server. These errors can include a detection timeout, no response from recursive resolution, or a servfail error. If you encounter this error, contact your DNS provider to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

  • If the resolution result shown here does not match the settings in the console, contact your DNS provider to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Recursive resolution tracing

Domain name recursive resolution is Normal

A recursive resolution trace checks the health of the resolution path. The main goal is to detect if the domain name's recursive resolution is poisoned.

  • Normal recursive resolution

    The resolution path is normal.

  • Poisoned recursive resolution

Generally, if the root DNS server directly returns an A record, it means an upstream network device blocked the recursive resolution process. If you encounter this error, the issue is beyond the scope of Alibaba Cloud DNS. Change your service domain name.

223.5.5.5 resolution result

A

10.10.10.10

MX

mx2.mail.aliyun.com

223.5.5.5 is the IP address for the public DNS service from Alibaba Cloud. To troubleshoot a DNS resolution failure, check if the change has taken effect on the authoritative DNS server from your DNS provider and on the client's local DNS server. Detection tools cannot get a client's local DNS information. This prevents them from simulating the DNS server automatically assigned to the client or the one assigned by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) for testing. However, public DNS services provide publicly accessible DNS addresses. Therefore, the detection tool uses 223.5.5.5 to simulate a test and check if the change has propagated to a local DNS server.

  • If you receive the message: No DNS record found for this domain name:

    (a) If the result from your DNS provider also shows this error, it means no DNS record is configured on the authoritative DNS server.

    (b) If your DNS provider returns a DNS record but the local DNS server shows this error, it means the change has not yet taken effect on the local DNS server.

  • The resolution result from 223.5.5.5 is inconsistent with the result from the DNS provider:

If the result from your DNS provider is correct, this means the change has not yet taken effect on the local DNS server. This might be because the local DNS cache has not expired. Wait for the Time to Live (TTL) to expire before you test again.

TTL effective period

The domain name TTL is 300 seconds.

Note: If you recently modified a domain name record, wait for the TTL to take effect before you check again.

Check the remaining time for your domain name's TTL cache.

For more information, see How to configure TTL.

FAQ

1. Is the test result from 223.5.5.5 representative?

A: The result is representative to some extent because a significant number of clients in China use 223.5.5.5. However, this test result does not apply to all users. If a test with 223.5.5.5 shows that the resolution has taken effect but you still cannot access the service locally, this suggests that the service is accessible for users of the 223.5.5.5 local DNS. The issue is likely with your local environment. You can use a local DNS test tool to investigate your local DNS.

Website check

The Website Check tool lets you perform an ICP filing check, verify if the website is on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) blacklist, ping the website's hosting IP address, and check the website status.

Field

Field value (Example)

Field description

ICP filing check

ICP filing: Completed (Zhe B2-20080101-4)

Domain name resolution is independent of ICP filing. A website's ICP filing status does not affect the configuration or activation of domain name resolution. However, a website cannot be accessed if it does not have a valid ICP filing or if the filing is in progress.

  • If a message indicates that the website does not have an ICP filing, contact your server provider.

MIIT website blacklist

The website is not on the MIIT blacklist.

If the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) blacklists your domain name, your website cannot be accessed.

  • If you get a notice that your website is on the MIIT blacklist, go to the MIIT website to check. Contact the MIIT to solve the problem.

Ping check

Ping check: Normal

Run a ping test on the website.

  • If a ping to the IP address fails, a security group may be blocking inbound ICMP requests. Contact your IP address provider to resolve the issue.

Website status check

HTTP status code: 301

This refers to an HTTP status query.

  • If a website access timeout error occurs, it indicates a TIMEOUT during the HTTP query. Contact your website server provider.

  • If the return code from the HTTP status query is greater than 400, contact your server provider or web hosting provider to troubleshoot the issue.

Local system info

Local system info is the basic information about the terminal device that you are using to run the domain name diagnosis.
