Database Backup (DBS) is a cost-effective and highly reliable cloud-native database backup platform that is provided by Alibaba Cloud. DBS provides unlimited backup storage, second-level emergency recovery, and recovery drills. DBS activates cold data by using second-level sandbox instances and backup data queries. DBS supports nearly 10 types of databases such as MySQL, SQL Server, and Oracle databases. DBS supports full-site backup of files, logs, and databases. DBS also supports various environments where databases are deployed, such as data centers, cloud platforms provided by other cloud service providers, Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances, and ApsaraDB RDS. DBS is the preferred and unified hybrid cloud backup platform for enterprises.

Why is DBS preferred?

  • Low RPO and RTO

DBS uses the log parsing and synchronization technologies of databases. This helps your business achieve the recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) within seconds.

  • Cost-effectiveness

Cloud storage is flexible and easy-to-use, and can be extended in unlimited scenarios. DBS supports the pay-as-you-go billing method.

  • Verifiability and ease of use

DBS restores data to ApsaraDB RDS and analyzes backup databases in the cloud.

  • Security and reliability

DBS uses Apsara Distributed File System to provide a highly reliable and comprehensive data encryption system.

DBS architecture

DBS can perform real-time backup. When your online data changes, DBS backs up the changed data and saves the backup data to cloud storage in real time to reduce the RPO to several seconds.

We recommend that you understand the following concepts:

  • Logical backup: backs up database objects, including tables, indexes, and stored procedures. Logical backup tools include the mysqldump command of MySQL and the exp and imp commands of Oracle.
  • Physical backup: backs up database files in operating systems. Physical backup tools include MySQL XtraBackup and Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN).
  • Snapshot backup: backs up a dataset by creating a fully usable copy based on the snapshot technology. You can choose to maintain snapshots only on your computer, or perform cross-machine backup for the snapshots. Snapshot backup tools include Veritas File System, Linux Logical Volume Manager (LVM), and NetApp Network Attached Storage (NAS).
